Abstract: Particulate olefin polymers are prepared by catalytic polymerization of monoolefins in an auxiliary liquid containing the monomers to be polymerized in dissolved form and the particulate polymer product in suspended form. The reaction mixture is recycled in a loop to which the starting materials are fed and from which the particulate polymer formed is removed. The essential features are (a) that a side stream is branched off from the loop, (b) that the side stream is caused to pass through a separating zone in which particulate olefin polymer is separated by centrifugal acceleration at temperatures and pressures in the same range as present in the loop and (c) that the separated particulate olefin polymer is discharged through flashing means.

Abstract: Polymers of monoolefins are made by polymerizing the monomers in the presence of a catalyst comprising chromium oxide or a "Ziegler-type" catalyst, and optionally hydrogen, at temperatures below the softening point of the polymers formed, in a fluidized bed formed from the catalysts, and the polymers formed at a flow velocity of the monoolefin in the fluidized bed of up to about 15 cm./sec., wherein the ratio of the diameter to the height of the fluidized layer is between 1:1 and 1:8 and the fluidized bed is stirred by moving the particles of polymer formed and particles of catalyst in the direction of the monoolefin by means of a stirrer having a shaft on which blades are provided in spaced relation and which rotate at 20 to 250 r.p.m. The Specification also includes an apparatus for effecting the above process which comprises a container having a cylindrical portion and an upper portion which tapers outwardly, and a shaft rotatable in the cylindrical portion which has mounted thereon a plurality of spaced blades obliquely arranged so that an upward movement is imparted to material in the container. The blades are preferably provided at their outer ends with portions in the shape of ring segments and the blades are arranged on axes which are perpendicular to the stirrer shaft and uniformly twisted with respect to each other. The Specification contains a long list of catalysts which may be used. Exemplified catalysts are chromium oxides supported on SiO2 or aluminium silicate; triisobutyaluminium and TiCl3; triethylaluminium, TiCl3, and di-n-butylformamide or diethylene glycol diethyl ether; triethylaluminium, TiCl3, and triphenylphosphine oxide; a complex of 3TiCl3.AlCl3, diethylaluminium chloride and triphenylbutylphosphonium chloride, a mixture of methylaluminium sesquichloride, carbon black, and vanadium oxychloride, and a mixture of diethylaluminium chloride and 3TiCl3.AlCl3. Exemplified monomers are ethylene, propylene, a mixture of ethylene and butene-1, a mixture of ethylene and propylene, and 4-methylpentene-1.

Abstract: 1,046,552. Steam traps &c. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. Feb. 19, 1964 [Feb. 20, 1963], No. 6879/64. Heading F4U. A thermally controlled condensate discharger comprises thermal bimetallic control means controlling a valve having a stem 11 and having a plate 15 on the outlet side of the valve seating 22 of valve body 4, which plate forms a gap 23 with valve body 4, the diameter of the plate being at least twice that of the valve passage 12. Condensate and steam pass through passage 7, chamber 9 enclosing the bimetallic plates, passages 10, 11, 12 in the valve body and out through chamber 20 adjacent the plate 15 and outlet 21. The valve is opened by the temperature effect on the bimetallic plates 17 and pressure in chamber 9. As condensate passes through the gap between valve plate and body the change of pressure causes the formation of steam in the gap which assists opening. The plate and stem may be joined by a conical part, the plate and seating may have curved surfaces and the gap may widen outwardly.
