Abstract: Perylene derivatives (I) carrying sterically or electrostatically stabilizing substituents are new. Perylene derivatives of formula (I) carrying sterically or electrostatically stabilizing substituents are new [Image] A : oxygen, methylene or NR1>; R1>hydrogen, aryl, aralkyl, heteroaryl, cycloalkyl or 1-22C alkyl; each Y : COO, CONR2>, SO3 or SO2NR2>; R2>hydrogen, aryl, aralkyl, heteroaryl, cycloalkyl, 1-22, particularly 1-6, C alkyl, or alkylamino where the amino group may contain one or more additional substituents or is part of a polyamine; each X : a substituent that is mainly sterically and/or electrostatically stabilizing; each Z : alkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy or halo, particularly chloro or bromo; n : 1 or more; m : zero or an integer. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) perylene derivatives of formula (IV); (2) method for preparing (I) or (IV) by reacting the corresponding compound (V) where Y-X is replaced by chlorocarbonyl or chlorosulfonyl with the appropriate alcohol, thiol or amine; (3) pigment composition (A) containing at least one organic pigment (A1) and at least one compound (A2) having a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon base structure covalently linked to at least one substituent with a sterically or electrochemically stabilizing effect on (A1); and (4) pigment dispersion, particularly paints or varnish, containing at least one (I) or (IV) or the composition of (3). A preferred process for preparing modified polymeric dispersing additives comprises reacting a hyperbranched polyurethane having from 2 to 100 NCO groups and a molar mass of from 500 to 50,000 g/mol with one or more polyether derivatives.
