Abstract: Kaolin is bleached by treating with titanium trichloride and/or titanium sulphate preferably in acid solution, whereby ferric iron is reduced to ferrous iron. Neutralization if necessary is effected by aftertreating with alkali or alkaline earth bicarbonates or carbonate. Titanium trichloride and titanous sulphate may be used as 0,1-3% on weight of kaolin and added as a solid or aqueous solution. The suspension may be acidified with mineral acids preferably before titanium salt addition. Hydrochloric or sulphuric acids may be used giving a pH preferably below 2. Improved whiteness is obtained by aftertreating with pyrophosphate or highly condensed phosphates. Examples refer to bleaching with titanium trichloride alone, to a pretreatment with sulphuric acid and to a subsequent treatment with pyrophosphates, optionally followed by calcium carbonate addition. Comparison is made with the effects of sodium dithionite and sulphuric acid alone or with oxalic acid or sodium pyrophosphate and calcium carbonate. Titanium dioxide is also used with sodium dithionite and sulphuric acid.

Abstract: The present invention is concerned with a process for the after-treatment of dyed or printed synthetic fibers, or of materials which consist of synthetic fibers or contain a mixture of synthetic fibers and other fibers, using an aqueous solution which contains from 0.2 to 20 g/l of a mixture of from 80 to 20 parts by weight of a reductonate selected from the group consisting of monohydroxyacetone, dihydroxyacetone, dihydroxybutanone and glycolaldehyde;and from 20 to 80 parts by weight of one or more surfactants, the after-treatment being carried out at from 40 to 100.degree.C and at a pH above 8. This invention is more particularly useful in that the process is carried out with a reducing agent which is stable in alkaline solution in the presence of atmospheric oxygen, but biologically degradable.
