Abstract:
Polyvinylpyrrolidone is manufactured by polymerization of vinylpyrrolidone in an organic solvent in the presence of organic per-compounds wherein an anhydrous organic solvent is used and a heavy metal of atomic number from 23 to 29, in the form of a complex compound or a salt with an organic acid, is added as a co-activator. The polyvinylpyrrolidone manufactured according to the invention is used for pharmaceutical or cosmetic purposes, especially for the manufacture of polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine.

1362044 Poly-N-vinyl pyrrolidone-2 BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 2 Dec 1971 [3 Dec 1970] 55929/71 Heading C3P] [Also in Division C6] An insoluble and only slightly swellable poly- N-vinyl pyrrolidone-2 is prepared by polymerizing N-vinyl pyrrolidone-2 in aqueous solution in the presence of 0À5 to 10% by weight, based on the N-vinyl pyrrolidone, of a cyclic acid amide containing at least two ethylenically unsaturated groups, one of which is attached to an amide nitrogen atom which forms part of a heterocyclic ring, the polymerization being started at the surface of a metal which is susceptible to attack by oxygen and which is capable of forming a permeable oxide film or by seeds of poly-N-vinyl pyrrolidone-2 formed at the surface of said metal. The metal may be Fe, an Fe alloy, Co, Zn or Sn and may be the reactor. The amide may be N,N 1 - divinylimidazolidone - 2, N,N 1 - divinylhexahydropyrimidinone-2 or N-vinyl-3-ethylidinepyrrolidone-2. In the examples, N-vinylpyrrolidone-2 is polymerized in the presence of N,N 1 - divinylimidazolidone - 2, dibenzoyl peroxide and iron or zinc or seeds are produced by polymerizing N-vinylpyrrolidone-2 in the presence of N,N 1 -divinyl imidazolidone-2 or N,N 1 - divinylhexahydropyrimidone-2 dibenzoyl peroxide and iron and the seeds are used to polymerize N-vinyl pyrrolidone-2 in the presence of N,N 1 -divinyl imidazolidone-2 or N,N 1 -divinylhexahydropyrimidone-2.
Abstract:
A self-extinguishing material containing at least 2% of chemically combined chlorine and 0.05-5% of a complex compound of formula MxeAry(CO)z, where Me is a transition metal of Group VIB, VIIB or VIII of the Periodic System, Ar is an aromatic system, x is 1-3, y is 0-3, z is 0-12 and y + z is 2-9, is produced by polymerizing (a) a mixture of an olefinically unsaturated monomer containing chlorine and an olefinically unsaturated monomer free from chlorine, or (b) a mixture of an olefinically unsaturated monomer free from chlorine with an organic compound which does not copolymerize with the monomer which contains chlorine and which contains at least 4 carbon atoms, the polymerization being carried out in the presence of the complex compound, and of a dialkyl and/or ketone peroxide, an alkyl hydroperoxide and/or an ester of an acyl peroxide as a polymerization initiator. 2-20% of a gaseous or liquid expanding agent may be added to the material. The polymer may be a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and vinylidene chloride, of vinyl chloride and vinyl isobutyl ether, or a homo-polymer of methyl methacrylate or styrene. The complex compound may be dicyclopentadienyl iron (ferrocene) Polymerization may be carried out in bulk using as initiator tert-butyl perethyl hexamic acid ester, tetraglycidyl ether of pentaerythritol, tert-butyl hydroperoxide, ditert-butyl peroxide, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, cumene, hydroperoxide or in emulsion with water using sodium pyrophosphate and polyvinyl pyrrolidone. The material may be in the form of beads. The chlorine compound may be a chloroparaffin or a chlorinated polyethylene. The expanding agent may be pentane.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to the manufacture of insoluble and only slightly water-swellable polymers or copolymers of N-vinyl lactams by polymerization in the absence of oxygen and in the presence of sulfur compounds having a functionality of less than 6. These polymers and copolymers are obtained in the form of very fine granules showing good adsorptivity and good filtering properties.
Abstract:
Finely divided copolymers of maleic anhydride are produced by polymerizing a mixture of maleic anhydride and a vinyl ether of a C1- 8 alcohol and/or a vinyl ester of a C1- 8 carboxylic acid in an inert organic liquid in which the monomers but not the copolymer are soluble, with a free radical polymerization initiator and in the presence of a polystyrene, a copolymer of styrene (at least 50%) and an acrylic ester, polyvinyl methyl ether or a polyvinyl ester of a saturated C1- 3 carboxylic acid. The organic liquid may be a saturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic, or aromatic hydrocarbon. The vinyl ether may be vinyl-(cyclohexyl, diisopropyl carbinol, 2-ethylhexyl, -iso- or n-butyl or ethyl ether and the ester may be vinyl acetate (caprylate or propionate). The free radical initiator may be benzoyl peroxide or azodiisobutyro-nitrile. The copolymer may be treated with ammonia gas to form a hemi-amide ammonium salt.
