    Abstract: A process is claimed for the prepn. of substd. pyridines of formula (I) by reaction of acrolein (II) with either: (i) alkanals or their acetals of formula R2-CH2CHO (III), or (ii) ketones of formula (IV), in the presence of NH3: where R1 = 1-12C alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl gp.; R2 = acyl or alkoxycarbonyl. The reaction is carried out pref. in the gas phase, at a temp. between 100 and 500 deg.C, also in the presence of zeolite catalysts of the following types: (i) pentasil, esp. B, Fe or Al silicate-zeolites, (ii) faujasite, esp. Al silicate zeolites, or (iii) zeolites doped with alkali metals, alkaline earths, transition metals or rare earths. Pref. (a) alkanals (or their derivs.), (III) are dimethoxybutan-3-one (CH3COCH2CH(OCH3)2). Pref. (b) ketones, (IV) are acetylacetone (CH3COCH2COCH3) or methyl acetoacetate (CH3COCH2COOCH3). Pref. (c) zeolites are zeolites of the mordenite gp. or narrow-pored zeolites of the erionite or chabasite types, or zeolites of the faujasite type, namely Y-, X-or L-zeolites. In the latter type, esp. useful as ultrastable faujasites i.e. dealuminised zeolites. Also esp. useful are pentasil zeolites which possess high SiO2/Al2O3 content and pore sizes intermediate between A- and X- or Y-zeolites. Pref. (d) solvent (where used) is THF, C6H5CH3 or petrol ether.

    Abstract: Removal of NOx from waste gas (I) by selective redn. with NH3 is carried out in a reaction zone in the presence of catalysts, (I) being supplieo to the reaction zone continuously and the NH3 at intervals. The novel features are a) the direction of (I) is reversed periodically; b) NH3 is added at the start of each period in excess of the stoichoimetric amt. for redn. of NOx; c) the NH3 supply is cut off before unreacted NH3 leaves the reaction zone with (I); and d) the (I) flow is reversed as soon as the NOx and/or NH3 content of (I) leaving the reaction zone exceeds a predetermined value.

For prodn. of (II), the catalyst also contains a hydrogenation component and the reaction is effected in the presence of H2.
