    Abstract: Prodn. of alkenoate esters of formula (I) is effected by reacting a lactone of formula (II) with a 1-6C alkanol (III) at 50-450 deg. C in the presence of a zeolite and/or phosphate catalyst: R1 = 1-6C alkyl; R2 = H or 1-4C alkyl (same or different); R3 = H or Me; n = 1-3; m = 0-2; provided that n-m = 1 when R3 = H and n-m = 2 when R3 = Me. Pref. the reaction is effected in the gas phase at 200-350 deg. C using a (II):(III) molar ratio of 1:0.5-10. Pref. the catalyst is (a) a pentasil-type boro-, ferro- or aluminosilicate or faujasite-type aluminosilicate zeolite, opt. doped with alkali(ne earth), transition or rate earth metals, or (b) a zeolite-like aluminophosphate, silicoaluminophosphate, silicoferroaluminophosphate or ferroaluminophosphate.

    Abstract: A process for the separation of ortho-, meta- and para-tolunitrile from ternary mixtures of isomers entails removing ortho-tolunitrile from these mixtures by distillation under pressures of from 102 and 105 Pa and with a reflux ratio of from 1:1 to 200:1, and distilling the remaining binary mixture of meta- and para-tolunitrile to concentrate to more than 75 mol-% para-tolunitrile, and freezing out the paratolunitrile at below 26 DEG C., and a process for the preparation of suitable ternary mixtures of isomers entails isomerization of pure ortho-, meta- or para-tolunitrile or mixtures thereof at from 380 DEG to 580 DEG C. on zeolite catalysts.
