Abstract: Pentenate esters (I) prodn. involves heating formylvalerate esters (II) to 50-400 deg. C in the presence of zeolites (III) or phosphate(s) (IV) selected from Al, Si-Al, B-Al, Si-Fe, -Al, Ce, Zr, B, Fe and Sr phosphate. Pref. heating is carried out in the presence of (gas contg.) O2 and opt. an inert diluent. (III) or (IV) contains gp. VIII metal(s), pref. one gp. VIII noble metal(s) and opt. Fe-gp. metal(s) and opt. also sub-gp. I-VII element(s). (III) pref. have pentasil structure and esp. are Al, B or Fe silicate zeolites; or are Al silicate zeolites with faujasite structure. (IV) is Al, Si-Al, Fe-Al or B-Al phosphate.

Abstract: Prodn. of alkenoate esters of formula (I) is effected by reacting a lactone of formula (II) with a 1-6C alkanol (III) at 50-450 deg. C in the presence of a zeolite and/or phosphate catalyst: R1 = 1-6C alkyl; R2 = H or 1-4C alkyl (same or different); R3 = H or Me; n = 1-3; m = 0-2; provided that n-m = 1 when R3 = H and n-m = 2 when R3 = Me. Pref. the reaction is effected in the gas phase at 200-350 deg. C using a (II):(III) molar ratio of 1:0.5-10. Pref. the catalyst is (a) a pentasil-type boro-, ferro- or aluminosilicate or faujasite-type aluminosilicate zeolite, opt. doped with alkali(ne earth), transition or rate earth metals, or (b) a zeolite-like aluminophosphate, silicoaluminophosphate, silicoferroaluminophosphate or ferroaluminophosphate.

Abstract: A process for the separation of ortho-, meta- and para-tolunitrile from ternary mixtures of isomers entails removing ortho-tolunitrile from these mixtures by distillation under pressures of from 102 and 105 Pa and with a reflux ratio of from 1:1 to 200:1, and distilling the remaining binary mixture of meta- and para-tolunitrile to concentrate to more than 75 mol-% para-tolunitrile, and freezing out the paratolunitrile at below 26 DEG C., and a process for the preparation of suitable ternary mixtures of isomers entails isomerization of pure ortho-, meta- or para-tolunitrile or mixtures thereof at from 380 DEG to 580 DEG C. on zeolite catalysts.
