A silica-free, alpha -alumina containing catalyst support (I) is in the form of a hollow body in which at least part of the outer wall is cut through. Also claimed are: (i) a catalyst (II) consisting of alkali or alkaline earth metal(s) on support (I), (ii) production of (I) by forming a mixture of (A) a powder containing at least 95 wt% alpha -alumina and (B) a polymeric binder, removing the binder (B) and presintering the moulded product; (iii) production of catalyst (II) by making the formed support as in (ii), impregnating with solution(s) of metal salt(s) (as in i) and drying the impregnated support, and (iv) a silica-free, alpha -alumina containing catalyst (II) made by process (iii).
Abstract:
The invention concerns the use of polymers which can be produced by reacting (a) polymers containing vinylamine units with (b) compounds comprising aldehyde or keto groups and optionally (c) compounds comprising NH groups and/or OH groups, and which further have aminal, semi-aminal and/or aminal-acetal structures and optionally non-reacted vinylamine units as additives to detergents for inhibiting the transfer of dye during the washing process. The invention further concerns polymers which contain aminal, semi-aminal and/or aminal-acetal structures and which are obtained by reacting (a) polymers containing vinylamine units with (b) compounds comprising aldehyde or keto groups and (c) compounds comprising NH groups and/or OH groups. The invention also concerns detergents containing the above polymers in amounts ranging from 0.05 to 10 wt %.

Date Jan. 26, 1995Nitrile impurities are eliminated from polymers which contain acyclic N-vinyl-carboxamide and/or vinylamine units by treating the polymers with at least one oxidizing agent a) with exposure to light and/or b) in the presence of heavy metal ions.
Abstract:
In a process for making paper, paperboard and cardboard, paper pulps containing interfering materials are dehydrated in the presence of polymers which, as characteristic constituents, contain copolymerised units of the formulae … … with R and R = H or C1- to C3-alkyl, and have K values of at least 130, the polymers containing less than 10 mol% of units of formula II.
Abstract:
Process for preparing stable water-in-oil emulsions of hydrolysed polymers of N-vinylamides of the formula in which R and R denote H or C1-C6-alkyl, by polymerising compounds of the formula I, alone or mixed with other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, in the form of water-in-oil emulsions to give water-in-oil polymer emulsions, and subsequently hydrolysing the polymers, the hydrolysis of the polymers in the form of water-in-oil polymer emulsions being carried out in the presence of acids or bases and from 1 to 30% by weight, based on the polymers, of emulsifiers which are obtainable by reacting (A) C10- to C22-fatty alcohols with epichlorohydrin in the molar ratio 1:0.5 to 1:1.5 to give glycidyl ethers, (B) reacting the glycidyl ethers with (1) saturated C2- to C6-alcohols containing 2 to 6 OH groups or (2) monoethers thereof with C10- to C22-fatty alcohols, in the glycidyl ether:(1) or (2) molar ratio of from 1:0.5 to 6, in the presence of acids or bases, and (C) alkoxylating the reaction products from (B) using at least one C2- to C4-alkylene oxide in the molar ratio 1:1 to 6. The polymer emulsions obtainable in this way are used as dewatering, retention and flocculating agents in the production of paper and paper products.

Abstract:
A novel fixed-bed catalyst structure obtained using honeycomb elements, for highly exothermic and endothermic chemical reactions, wherein the required heat exchange, both in the liquid phase and in the gas phase, is forcibly effected in the fixed catalyst bed by means of static mixing elements made of inert ceramic and/or metallic material or completely of catalyst material, between the individual honeycomb elements.
Abstract:
Novel alpha -iminodiacetonitriles are prepared by a process in which an aldehyde-cyanohydrin or a haloacetonitrile is reacted with an aminonitrile, the reaction being carried out in the presence of a lower alkanol in the case of the preparation of symmetric alpha -iminodiacetonitriles, and in the presence of an auxiliary base in the case of the preparation employing a haloacetonitrile. The alpha -iminodiacetonitriles obtainable by the process of the invention are useful starting materials for the preparation of dyes, fungicides, bactericides, herbicides, textile assistants, anticorrosion agents, complex-forming agents, stabilizers in electroplating baths and inhibitors for antifreezes.
