Abstract: The invention relates to unsaturated polyesters containing oligomers of cyclopentadiene as terminal groups. More than 20% of the cyclopentadiene oligomers have a degree of polymerisation of >/= 3. The unsaturated polyesters can be used in the form of their solutions in ethylenically unsaturated monomers for the production of mouldings and coatings.

Abstract: Toluene-soluble copolymers (I) are prepd. from (A) 70-97 mol. % 8-12C vinyl aromatic hydrocarbons, (B) 3-20 mol. % semi-esters of maleic acid with 1-6C aliphatic or cycloaliphatic alkanols or oxa-alkanols and (C) 0-10 mol. % other ethylenically unsatd. monomers. (I) have no. av. mol. wt. 200-10000 and a Kramer-Sarnow-Nagel softening point 100-220 degrees C. (I) are used as binders for intaglio printing inks. (I) have good pigment-wetting properties; can be blended with standard commercial binders; are odourless and colourless. Pref. prepn. of (I) comprises addn. of at least 30% (B) in course of suspension polymerisation of (A), 0-70% (B) and opt. (C), at 50-100 degrees C. In an example, a toluene-soluble odourless, resinate-miscible copolymer was prepd. 140 parts mono-isobutyl maleate were added in 2 hrs. to aq. suspension, after start of polymerisation of 560 parts styrene, at 80 degrees C.
