    Abstract: Essentially phenol-free phenol resol ethers which are bonded via o,o'-methylene ether groups are prepared by a process in which A. where the process is carried out beginning with the methylolation in an aqueous medium, the methylolation is carried out in the presence of 0.5-10% by weight, based on the phenol employed, of Me++ ions, the latter are then removed as a sparingly soluble salt, the water present as a solvent in the reaction mixture is removed at 30 DEG -80 DEG C. in the presence or absence of one or more monohydric, dihydric or trihydric alcohols and an entraining agent, and the water of reaction formed during the etherification is separated off at 45 DEG -120 DEG C., and B. where the process is carried out beginning with the methylolation in a non-polar organic solvent, the methylolation is carried out in the presence of 0.1-0.3% by weight, based on the phenol employed, of Me++ ions, the etherification is effected at 95 DEG -120 DEG C. in the presence of one or more monohydric, dihydric or trihydric alcohols, with or without recycling of the distillate which passes over, and finally residual phenol in the products prepared by A. or B. is removed by evaporation in a thin film evaporator until the phenol content is less than 1% by weight. The phenol resol ethers prepared according to the invention are useful for the preparation of coating systems and for adhesives.

    Abstract: The heat-curable coating agent according to the invention contains a combination of a binder, which possesses basic nitrogen groups and is rendered water-dilutable by protonation with an acid, and a crosslinking agent and, if required, pigments, fillers, corrosion inhibitors, surface coating assistants and catalysts, and the binder used is a reaction product of a dicarboxylic acid or of a dicarboxylate or of a (meth)acrylate oligomer or polymer with an adduct of a di- or triglycidyl ether and a polyamine, the polyamine containing 2 or more amine nitrogen atoms per molecule and one or more alkylene chains of 3 or more carbon atoms between the amino groups, and has an NH amine number of from 50 to 150 mg of KOH/g and is combined with aminoplasts and/or phenoplasts as crosslinking agents. The novel coating agent is useful as a binder for the cathodic electrocoating of metal articles.

    Abstract: Phenol-free phenolic resins (I) with o,o'-methylene ether links, and the following process for their prepn., are claimed; (a) methylolation of phenol and/or m- or other alkylphenols, in aq. medium, in the presence of 0.5-10 (pref. 1.3-5) wt.% of divalent metal cations; (b) sepn. of the cations as insoluble salts; (c) reaction with mono-, di-, or tri-ols or methylolated amide gp.-contg. cpds. (II); (d) distn. of water, with an entraining agent as required; and (e) thin-layer evapn. of residual phenols. The novelty is that stage (e) is performed in the presence of an acid-binding cpd. (III) of pKa 4-11.5, or a suitable precursor (IV). (III) is esp. an amine, and (IV) is an unsymmetrical dialkylurea.
