Abstract: The invention concerns aqueous dispersions containing a polyurethane (A), containing structural units derived from compounds of formula (I), in which the substituents have the following meanings: R1, R2, R3 each designate hydrogen, C1-C24 alkyl or C6 - C24 alkenyl; R4 designates hydrogen; R5, R6 a) together designate C4-C10 alkane-diyl, b) each designate C2-C10 alkyl, C5-C8 cycloalkyl or C7-C20 aralkyl, c) each designate a hydroxyl-terminated poly(C2C4 alkylene oxide), or d) designate an R5 or R6 group with the meaning given in (a) to (c) and the other group designating hydrogen or a group of formula (II), in which X designates C2-C6 alkane-diyl; and R7 has the same meaning as R5 or R6 with the exception that R7 is not a group of formula II, R5 and R6 carrying a total of between 2 and 5 hydroxyl groups bonded to aliphatic carbon atoms; and R5 and/or R6 optionally carrying 1 or 2 aromatically bonded hydroxyl groups or 1 nitrile, tertiary amino, carboxylic acid or sulphonic acid group which are optionally present in the form of their salts.

Abstract: Polyadducts, free from epoxide groups, are obtained from ammonia and epoxide compounds by reacting 1 mole of ammonia with from 1.2 to 2.0 equivalents of epoxide, so that if diepoxide compounds are used products of the general formula (I) are obtained, whilst if triepoxides and/or tetraepoxide compounds are used, by themselves, or together with diepoxide compounds, products of the general formula II (II) are produced; in these formulae, the E1's are identical or different hydroxyl-containing divalent radicals and the E2's are identical or different hydroxyl-containing trivalent or tetravalent radicals, resulting from the opening of the oxirane rings of epoxide compounds containing two, three or four epoxide groups in the molecule, n1, n3 and n5 are from 0 to 3, n2 and n4 are from 1 to 3 and X is 0 or 1, and one or more of the divalent radicals E1 in the general formula (II) may or may not be replaced by polyvalent radicals E2. The novel polyadducts can be modified by reaction with aldehydes, ketones, monoepoxide compounds, carboxylic acids, carboxylic acid esters or isocyanates, or by protonation with an acid, and may be used, for example, for the cathodic electrocoating of metallic articles.

Abstract: The invention concerns polyadducts and their use. The polyadducts, possessing nitrogen-basic groups, have a mean molecular weight of from 500 to 10,000 and contain groups, attached to aromatic rings, of the general formula (I) (I) where R1 and R2 are identical or different and each is hydrogen or methyl, which polyadduct has been prepared from a monophenol and/or polyphenol which possesses groups of the general formula (I), a polyepoxide compound and an amine or amine salt. In particular, these polyadducts are used, after protonizing with an acid, as binders for the cathodic electrocoating of metal articles.

Multi-stage emulsion polymers (I) comprising (1) domain(s) with a glass transition point (Tg) of -10 to +40 deg C and (2) domain(s) with a Tg of +50 to 120 deg C in a wt. ratio of (1):(2) = (90:10)-(50:50), in which (1) contains polymerized units of (1a) 5-60 wt.% methyl and/or ethyl methacrylate (MMA/EMA), (1b) 20-80 wt.% 4-12C alkyl acrylate (Alk-A), (1c) up to 50 wt% vinylaromatics (V-Ar), (1d) 0.1-5 wt.% unsaturated carboxylic acid (USAc), (1e) up to 5 wt.% unsaturated amide (USAm) and (1f) up to 10 wt.% other unsaturated monomers (UM) and (2) contains units of (2a) up to 99.9 wt.% MMA and/or EMA, (2b) up to 99.9 wt.% V-Ar and/or 4-12C alkyl methacrylate (Alk-MA), (2c) 0.1-5 wt% USAc, (2d) up to 10 wt.% USAm and (2e) up to 10 wt.% UM. Abstract: Surface-coating binders based on a reaction product of Mannich bases, obtained from polyhydric phenols, secondary amines and formaldehyde, with epoxy resins. The Mannich bases and/or the epoxy resins carry hydroxyl groups, bonded to aliphatic structures, which have been converted to urethane groups by reaction with partially blocked polyisocyanates. When protonized and diluted with water, the surface-coating binders may be used as cationic electrocoatings.
