    Abstract: Polyadducts, free from epoxide groups, are obtained from ammonia and epoxide compounds by reacting 1 mole of ammonia with from 1.2 to 2.0 equivalents of epoxide, so that if diepoxide compounds are used products of the general formula (I) are obtained, whilst if triepoxides and/or tetraepoxide compounds are used, by themselves, or together with diepoxide compounds, products of the general formula II (II) are produced; in these formulae, the E1's are identical or different hydroxyl-containing divalent radicals and the E2's are identical or different hydroxyl-containing trivalent or tetravalent radicals, resulting from the opening of the oxirane rings of epoxide compounds containing two, three or four epoxide groups in the molecule, n1, n3 and n5 are from 0 to 3, n2 and n4 are from 1 to 3 and X is 0 or 1, and one or more of the divalent radicals E1 in the general formula (II) may or may not be replaced by polyvalent radicals E2. The novel polyadducts can be modified by reaction with aldehydes, ketones, monoepoxide compounds, carboxylic acids, carboxylic acid esters or isocyanates, or by protonation with an acid, and may be used, for example, for the cathodic electrocoating of metallic articles.

    Abstract: Emulsion polymers with domains (1) and (2) with glass transition points of -10 to +40 deg C and +50 to 120 deg C respectively, based on acrylic, vinylaromatic (V-Ar) and other monomers, in which (1) and/or (2) contains a nitrogen-containing coupling monomer, (1) contains at least 10 wt.% V-Ar and/or (2) contains at least 15 wt.% V-Ar and/or alkyl methacrylate. Multi-stage emulsion polymers (I) comprising (1) domain(s) with a glass transition point (Tg) of -10 to +40 deg C and (2) domain(s) with a Tg of +50 to 120 deg C in a wt. ratio of (1):(2) = (90:10)-(50:50), in which (1) contains polymerized units of (1a) 5-60 wt.% methyl and/or ethyl methacrylate (MMA/EMA), (1b) 20-80 wt.% 4-12C alkyl acrylate (Alk-A), (1c) up to 50 wt% vinylaromatics (V-Ar), (1d) 0.1-5 wt.% unsaturated carboxylic acid (USAc), (1e) up to 5 wt.% unsaturated amide (USAm) and (1f) up to 10 wt.% other unsaturated monomers (UM) and (2) contains units of (2a) up to 99.9 wt.% MMA and/or EMA, (2b) up to 99.9 wt.% V-Ar and/or 4-12C alkyl methacrylate (Alk-MA), (2c) 0.1-5 wt% USAc, (2d) up to 10 wt.% USAm and (2e) up to 10 wt.% UM. Domain(s) (1) and/or (2) also contain(s) 0.1-10 wt.% nitrogen-containing, adhesion-promoting monomer (N-A-M), while (1) contains at least 10 wt% V-Ar and/or (2) contains at least 15 wt.% V-Ar and/or Alk-MA. An Independent claim is also included for water-based paint containing (I) and pigment(s).

    Abstract: Aqueous dispersions containing a polyurethane(A) having structural units derived from compounds of the formula (I) (see fig. I) in which the substituents have the following meanings: R1, R2, R3 independently denote hydrogen, C1-C24 alkyl or C6-C24 alkenyl R4 denotes hydrogen R5, R6 (a) together denote C4-C10 alkanediyl, (b) each denotes C2-C10 alkyl, C5-C8 cycloalkyl or C7-C20 aralkyl, (c) each denotes a hydroxyl-terminated poly(C2-C4 alkylene oxide), or (d) one radical R5 or R6 has the meaning stated under (a) to (c) and the other is hydrogen or a radical of the formula II (see fig. II) in which X denotes C2-C6 alkanediyl and R7 has the same meaning as R5 or R6 except that R7 does not denote a radical of the formula II, where . - the radicals R5 and R6 in each of the cases (a) and (d) carry a total of one (1 ) hydroxyl group attached to an aliphatic carbon atom, - optionally the radical R5 and/or R6 carries 1 or 2 hydroxyl groups bonde d to an aromatic carbon atom or one nitrile, tertiary amino, carboxylic acid or sulfonic acid group which are optionally present in the form of their salts, and - the average functionality (F) of all structural components of the polyur ethane (A) is from 1.5 to 2.2, based on the functionalities which interreact during the synthesis of the polyurethane (A) in an addition reaction.
