Abstract: Process for the preparation of homopolymers or copolymers by homopolymerization or copolymerization of free-radically polymerizable water-soluble and/or water-dispersible monomers, optionally with further comonomers and optionally with at least one crosslinker, in an inverse emulsion polymerization in the presence of at least one redox initiator pair comprising an oxidizing agent and a reducing agent, where the reducing agent is 2-hydroxy-2-sulfinatoacetic acid and/or salt thereof; homopolymers or copolymers preparable by the process according to the invention, water-in-oil emulsions which comprise at least one homopolymer or copolymer according to the invention, solid compositions which comprise at least one homopolymer or copolymer according to the invention, the use of 2-hydroxy-2-sulfinatoacetic acid and/or salt thereof as reducing agent in a process for the preparation of homopolymers or copolymers; the use of the water-in-oil emulsion comprising at least one homopolymer or copolymer according to the invention for the thickening of aqueous solutions, and the use of 2-hydroxy-2-sulfinatoacetic acid and/or salt thereof as reducing component of a redox initiator pair comprising an oxidizing agent and a reducing agent for avoiding induction times during inverse emulsion polymerization.

Abstract: The heat-curable coating agent according to the invention contains a combination of a binder, which possesses basic nitrogen groups and is rendered water-dilutable by protonation with an acid, and a crosslinking agent and, if required, pigments, fillers, corrosion inhibitors, surface coating assistants and catalysts, and the binder used is a reaction product of a dicarboxylic acid or of a dicarboxylate or of a (meth)acrylate oligomer or polymer with an adduct of a di- or triglycidyl ether and a polyamine, the polyamine containing 2 or more amine nitrogen atoms per molecule and one or more alkylene chains of 3 or more carbon atoms between the amino groups, and has an NH amine number of from 50 to 150 mg of KOH/g and is combined with aminoplasts and/or phenoplasts as crosslinking agents. The novel coating agent is useful as a binder for the cathodic electrocoating of metal articles.

Abstract: Polyadducts, free from epoxide groups, are obtained from ammonia and epoxide compounds by reacting 1 mole of ammonia with from 1.2 to 2.0 equivalents of epoxide, so that if diepoxide compounds are used products of the general formula (I) are obtained, whilst if triepoxides and/or tetraepoxide compounds are used, by themselves, or together with diepoxide compounds, products of the general formula II (II) are produced; in these formulae, the E1's are identical or different hydroxyl-containing divalent radicals and the E2's are identical or different hydroxyl-containing trivalent or tetravalent radicals, resulting from the opening of the oxirane rings of epoxide compounds containing two, three or four epoxide groups in the molecule, n1, n3 and n5 are from 0 to 3, n2 and n4 are from 1 to 3 and X is 0 or 1, and one or more of the divalent radicals E1 in the general formula (II) may or may not be replaced by polyvalent radicals E2. The novel polyadducts can be modified by reaction with aldehydes, ketones, monoepoxide compounds, carboxylic acids, carboxylic acid esters or isocyanates, or by protonation with an acid, and may be used, for example, for the cathodic electrocoating of metallic articles.

Abstract: The invention concerns polyadducts and their use. The polyadducts, possessing nitrogen-basic groups, have a mean molecular weight of from 500 to 10,000 and contain groups, attached to aromatic rings, of the general formula (I) (I) where R1 and R2 are identical or different and each is hydrogen or methyl, which polyadduct has been prepared from a monophenol and/or polyphenol which possesses groups of the general formula (I), a polyepoxide compound and an amine or amine salt. In particular, these polyadducts are used, after protonizing with an acid, as binders for the cathodic electrocoating of metal articles.
