Abstract: Disclosed is a method of obtaining caprolactam from polymers containing caprolactam in the presence of superheated water. The proposed method is based on the use of polymers containing the repeating unit -¢-N(H)-(CH2)5-C(O)-!- or mixtures consisting essentially of: 40-99.99 wt.% of a polymer containing the repeating unit -¢-N(H)-(CH2)5-C(O)-!-;0.01-50 wt.% of additives selected from the group consisting of inorganic fillers, organic and inorganic pigments and dyes; 0-10 wt.% of organic and/or inorganic additives; 0-40 wt.% of polymers which do not contain polyamide; 0-60 wt.% of polyamides with the exception of polycaprolactam and copolyamides based on caprolactam. These polymers or mixtures are brought into contact with superheated water at a temperature of 280-320 ~C and at a pressure of 7.5-15 Mpa, the weight ratio of water to the polymer containing the repeating unit -¢-N(H)-(CH2)5-C(O)-!- being between 5:1 and 13:1 and the reaction time less than 3 hours. The reaction mixture consisting essentially of water and the polymers or mixture indicated above should contain no gaseous phase under the conditions of hydrolysis.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method of obtaining caprolactam from polymers containing caprolactam in the presence of superheated water. These polymers or mixtures are brought into contact with superheated water at a temperature of 280 - 320 C and at a pressure of 7.5 - 15 Mpa, the weight ratio of water to the polymer containing the repeating unit -[-N(H)-(CH2)5-C(O)-]- being between 5 : 1 and 13 : 1 and the reaction time less than 3 hours. The reaction mixture consisting essentially of water and the polymers or mixture indicated above should contain no gaseous phase under the conditions of hydrolysis. Also disclosed is an apparatus for making the same and the use of the said method and apparatus for recycling polycaprolactam-containing wastes.

The depolymerization process ia carried out in the presence of water without addition of acid or base at a temperature ranging from 270 to 350 degC and weight ratio of water to the polymer or the thermoplastic moulding material ranging from 1:1 to 20:1 and for a reaction period shorter than 3 hours.
