Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing homopolymers and copolymers of isobutene by the continuous cationic polymerization of isobutene or mixtures of isobutene with ethylenically unsaturated comonomers in the presence of an initiator system comprising: i) a Lewis acid selected among covalent metal- halogen compounds and covalent semimetal-halogen compounds; ii) at least one aprotic organic compound (I) having at least one functional group (FG) which , under polymerization conditions, forms a carbocation or a cationogenic compl ex with the Lewis acid, in an organic solvent that is inert to the Lewis acid. The inventive method is characterized in that the polymerization is carried out in a tubular continuous flow reactor that has a number of bends with an alternating bending direction.

Abstract: Water-absorbing foamlike crosslinked polymers which are obtainable by(I) foaming a polymerizable aqueous mixture which consists of(a) monoethylenically unsaturated monomers containing acid groups, which are at least 50 mol % neutralized,(b) with or without other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers,(c) crosslinker,(d) initiators,(e) from 0.1 to 20% by weight of at least one surfactant,(f) with or without one or more solubilizers and(g) with or without thickeners, foam stabilizers, polymerization regulators, fillers and/or cell nucleating agents,the foaming being performed by dispersing fine bubbles of a gas inert to free radicals, and(II) polymerizing the foamed mixture with formation of a foamed hydrogel, with or without adjusting the water content of the foamed polymer to from 1 to 60% by weight, processes for their preparation and their use in sanitary articles which are used for absorbing body fluids and in dressing materials for covering wounds are described.

Abstract: Production of homo- or co-polymers of isobutene involves continuous cationic polymerisation of isobutene or mixtures of isobutene with unsaturated comonomers in the presence of an initiator system comprising a Lewis acid, and aprotic organic compound(s) with functional group(s) which form carbocations or cationogenic complexes with the Lewis acid under polymerisation conditions. Production of homo- or co-polymers of isobutene involves continuous cationic polymerisation of isobutene or mixtures of isobutene with unsaturated comonomers in the presence of an initiator system comprising (i) a Lewis acid selected from covalent halogen compounds of metals or metalloids, and (ii) aprotic organic compound(s) (I) with functional group(s) (FG) which form carbocations or cationogenic complexes with (i) under polymerisation conditions, in an organic solvent which is inert towards (i). An Independent claim is included for a tubular flow reactor used in the above polymerisation method, including several bends in alternating directions.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing odorant polymers or plastics, wherein a crushed or fine particle first polymer material is mixed with the desired odorant, is allowed to swell during a predetermined period and then subjected to further treatment at a predetermined pressure and temperature. After swelling with the odorant, the first polymer material can be mixed with a second plastic material, wherein the first polymer material and the second plastic material can be identical or different from each. Odorant polymers can also be obtained by using a polymer as second plastic material. The invention also relates to the odorant polymer or the odorant plastic produced according to the inventive method and to a molding material or an object containing the odorant polymer or the odorant plastic.

Abstract: The invention concerns water-absorbent cross-linked polymers in foam form which are obtained by: (I) foaming a polymerizable aqueous mixture which comprises: (a) monoethylenically unsaturated monomers which contain acid groups and are neutralized to at least 50 mol %; (b) optionally other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers; (c) cross-linking agents; (d) initiators; (e) between 0.1 and 20 wt % of at least one surfactant; (f) optionally at least one solubilizer; and (g) optionally thickening agents, foam stabilizers, polymerization regulators, fillers and/or cell nucleating agents; foaming occurring by dispersing fine bubbles of a gas which is inert with respect to radicals; and (II) polymerizing the foamed mixture, forming a foam-form hydrogel and optionally adjusting the water content of the foam-form polymer to between 1 and 60 wt %. The invention further concerns a process for preparing these polymers and their use in sanitary articles which are used to absorb body fluids, and in bandaging material for covering wounds.
