Abstract: Polymerizable, mouldable compositions comprise (1) 2-80 parts by weight of a butadiene polymer containing polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated groups and (2) 100 parts by weight of a liquid organic monomer containing polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated groups, at least 75% by weight of component (2) being the acrylic acid ester of tricyclo - [5,2,1,02,6]-decene - (3) - ol - (9). Component (1) may be butadiene homopolymer, particularly the 1,4-polymer; or a copolymer of butadiene with, for example, styrene, a -methyl-styrene, N-vinyl-pyridine and/or acrylonitrile, particularly a copolymer in which the butadiene units are 1,2-linked. Additional monomers which may be included in component (2) can be, for example, those mentioned above in the butadiene copolymers. The compositions may include a polymerization inhibitor, e.g. t-butylhydroquinone or t-butylpyrocatechol; a filler or reinforcing agent, e.g. a glass fibre mat; a pigment; a flame retardant, e.g. a chloroparaffin and tri-(b -chloroethyl) phosphate (stabilized with an epoxidized monoester of glycerol and versatic acid). The compositions are moulded and polymerized in the presence of an initiator such as cyclohexanone peroxide or benzoyl peroxide in combination with a metal salt, e.g. cobalt naphthenate or amine, e.g. dimethylaniline, accelerator.ALSO:The acrylic acid ester of tricyclo-[5,2,1,02,6]-decene -(3)-ol-(9) is prepared by reacting excess acrylic acid with dicyclopentadiene in the presence of BF3 and hydroquinone, firstly at 40 DEG C. and subsequently at 65 DEG C. After removal of the excess acid, washing and extracting, the ester product is distilled in vacuo in the presence of phenothiazine.

Abstract: A process for consolidating subterranean rock formations comprises injecting under pressure into the formation a liquid material which is curable by polymerization and curing the material by the action of a polymerization catalyst, said liquid material consisting of, or containing as the main component, tri-cyclo-[5,2,1,02,6] -decene-(3)-ol-(9)-acrylate. The liquid material may include other unsaturated monomers, unsaturated polyester resins, and preformed polymers, derived for example from vinyl chloride, butadiene, styrene, acrylic and methacrylic esters, and acrylonitrile. The material may also include a polymerization inhibitor to prevent premature curing. Catalysts exemplified are cyclohexanone peroxide/cobalt naphthenate and benzoyl peroxide/N-methyl-N-b -hydroxypropylaniline. In examples, the cycloaliphatic acrylate is combined with (1) an unsaturated polyester prepared from maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride and propanediol, (2) polyvinyl chloride and (3) polybutadiene.ALSO:Tricyclo[5,2,1,02,6] - decene - (3) - ol - (9) acrylate (TDA) is prepared by cooling a mixture of hydroquinone, acrylic acid, boron trifluoride and added dicyclopentadiene to 40 DEG C., allowing the temperature to rise to 65 DEG C. over 4 hours. The excess acrylic acid is vacuum distilled and the residue dissolved in pentane, washed with water, 10% Na2CO3 and 5% NaOH solutions. The pentane is distilled off from the organic layer, phenothiazine is added and TDA distilled off under vacuum.

Abstract: Unsaturated polyester resin systems contain (1) at least one monomeric ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable compound and (2) at least one resinous ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable polyester containing, connected via ester linkages (a) radicals of dibasic carboxylic acids, (b) radicals of dihydric alcohols and optionally (c) radicals of other carboxylic acids and/or (d) radicals of other alcohols, at least a portion of the radicals of dibasic carboxylic acids being radicals of cyclohexene-1-dicarboxylic acid-4,5 radicals and at least part of the radicals of the polyester which are not cyclohexene-1-dicarboxyli acid-4,5 radicals having ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable groups, wherein said unsaturated polyester resins contain polyesters (2) whose hydroxyl number (HN) and acid number (AN) are in a ratio of (HN): (AN) of less than 1, preferably less than 0.2. In general the mean molecular weight of the polyesters is between 1000 and 5000 and, if desired, a portion of these polyesters in the polyester resins may be replaced by one or more conventional polyesters. Lists of compounds (1), (2a) (2b) (2c) and (2d) are given, but the preferred polyesters (2) are prepared from radicals of cyclohexene-1-dicarboxylic acid-4,5 (a1) and radicals of maleic acid (a2) and/or radicals of fumaric acid (a3) in the molar ratio of (a1): [(a2) + (a3)] of 1:3 to 1:0.5, and as radicals (b) radicals of aliphatic ether diols of the type 3-monooxaalkanediols 3,6-dioxaalkanediols and 3,6,9-trioxaalkanediols having 4 to 12 carbon atoms, preferably radicals of 3-oxapentanediol-1,5. Other preferred polyesters (2) are prepared from cyclohexene-1-dicarboxylic acid-4,5 as radicals (a) and as radicals (b) radicals of dihydric aliphatic ether diols of the type mono-(allyloxy)-alkanediols and di-(allyloxy)-alkane diols having 6 to 12 carbon atoms, e.g. glycerine monoallyl ether radicals and/or pentaerythritol diallyl ether radicals.

Abstract: Unsaturated polyesters are cured with an additional ethylenically unsaturated monomer using as a catalyst system a mixture of an organic hydroperoxide and at least one of cobalt bimaleate or cobalt bicitraconate. The catalyst system exemplified is a mixture of 1-hydroperoxy-11-hydroxydicyclohexyl peroxide, 1,11-bis-hydroperoxydicyclohexyl peroxide and cobalt dimaleate. Unsaturated polyesters used are (1) maleic acid, phthalic acid and propylene glycol (1, 2) condensate dissolved in styrene and (2) fumaric acid/diethylene glycol condensate together with the tetra-allyl ether of tetramethylolglyoxaldiureine and styrene. Hydroquinone is used as inhibitor. Both the cobalt bimaleate and bicitraconate polymerise in the course of the reaction.
