Abstract: In the prodn. of (cyclo)aliphatic beta-ketoesters (I) by reacting a (cyclo)aliphatic methyl ketone (II) with a dialkyl carbonate (III) and a molar excess of alkali metal (m)ethylate (IV) w.r.t. (II), followed by hydrolysis and neutralisation of the reaction prod., the (IV):(II) molar ratio is (1.6-6):1 and the reaction mixt. contains no hexamethyl-phosphoryl triamide (HMPT) as solvent. Pref. (II) is isopropyl methyl ketone (IIA); (III) dimethylcarbonate (IIIA); and (IV) NaOMe. Excess (III) is use, which is expensive and can only be re-used after costly purificn. stages. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are valuable intermediates, e.g. for the synthesis of herbicides by base-induced reaction with a hydroxyamic acid chloride to isoxazole derivs. (I) are obtd. in good yields, without the need to use HMPT.
