Abstract: Copolymers prepared by a process comprising free-radical polymerizing: (a) more than 15 to 40% by weight of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid; (b) 30 to less than 85% by weight of ethyl methacrylate; and (c) 0 to 50% by weight of at least one additional free-radically polymerizable monomer other than the at least one monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and ethyl methacrylate; wherein the total amount of (a), (b) and (c) equals 100% by weight; with the proviso that where the process comprises a solution polymerization, (a) consists of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, and (c) is an ester of (meth)acrylic acid and an aliphatic C 8 -C 18 -alcohol, then the ester of (meth)acrylic acid and an aliphatic C 8 -C 18 -alcohol is not present in an amount of 5 to 40% by weight; and with the proviso that where (c) is selected from the group consisting of N-vinylpyrrolidone, N-vinylcaprolactam and mixtures thereof; then the N-vinylpyrrolidone, N-vinylcaprolactam or mixture thereof is present in an amount of less than 5% by weight.

Abstract: A cosmetic or pharmaceutical preparation containing a water soluble or water dispersible copolymer (A) obtainable by radical copolymerization of: (1) (meth)acrylic acid amide; (2) alpha-beta-ethylenically unsaturated amide group containing compounds starch, starch derivatives and their mixtures; and (3) at least one cosmetically acceptable carrier is new. A cosmetic or pharmaceutical preparation containing: (1) at least one water soluble of water dispersible copolymer (A) obtainable by radical copolymerization of (wt.%): (a) (meth)acrylic acid amide (5-90); (b) at least one alpha-beta-ethylenically unsaturated amide group containing compounds of formula R1-C(O)-NR2R3 (I) (0-85): (c) at least one component different from (a) and (b) with a copolymerisable unsaturated water soluble compound (0-40), where the sum of (b) and (c) is at least 5 wt.%, optionally in the presence of up to 25 wt.% on the total weight of components (a) and (b) of at least one water soluble component (d) selected from: (i) polyether containing compounds; (ii) polymers having at least one 50 wt.% repeating units derived from vinyl alcohol; and (iii) starch and starch derivatives and their mixtures; and (2) at least one cosmetically acceptable carrier. R1, R2 = CH2=CR4; R4 = H or 1-4C alkyl; R1, R2, R3 = H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, heterocycloalkyl, aryl or heteroaryl; provided that: (1) either R1 is CH2=CR4 and R2 is H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, heterocycloalkyl, aryl or heteroaryl or joined with R3 or R2 is C=R4 and R1 is H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, heterocycloalkyl, aryl or heteroaryl or joined with R3; and (2) both of R2 and R3 are not H. An Independent claim is also included for a copolymer A obtainable by radical polymerization of (wt.%)::(a) methacrylic acid amide (10-45) and (b) vinylpyrrolidone and/or vinylcaprolacatam (60-90), (c) at least one different from (a) and (b) copolymerisable unsaturated water soluble compound (0-25), optionally in the presence of up to 25 wt.% on the total weight of (a)-(d) of polymers (d2) and/or starch or starch derivatives.

Abstract: Use of polymers of 30-65% by weight of N-vinylcaprolactam, 35-65% by weight of a monomer mixture of N-vinylimidazole and vinylpyrrolidone, where the weight ratio of N-vinylimidazole to vinylpyrrolidone is between 0.085 and 0.30, 0-15% by weight of a nitrogen-containing quaternizable monomer (A), which is different from N-vinylimidazole, where the sum of monomer (A) and N-vinylimidazole is less than 18% by weight, in cosmetic preparations.
