Abstract: Quaternary ammonium salts of vinyl sulphonic acid (0,1 to 10%) may be copolymerized with 99,9-90% of other ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable compounds in aqueous dispersion free from emulsifier and in otherwise conventional manner. Examples specify the polymerization of trimethylphenylammonium vinyl sulphonate, trimethylcyclohexyl ammonium vinyl sulphonate, the quaternary ammonium salts prepared by reacting triethanolamine and methyl vinyl sulphonate and reacting methyl vinyl sulphonate with the reaction product of 1 mol. of diethylamine and 4 mols. of ethylene oxide. The other unsaturated monomers may be vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, ethyl acrylate, n-butyl acrylate or vinylidene chloride. The initiator system may be potassium persulphate or potassium persulphate/sodium pyrophosphate. Many other monomers and initiator systems are mentioned.

Abstract: 880,993. Agglutinated fibrous fabrics; impregnated paper &c. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. Oct. 30, 1959 [Nov. 5, 1958], No. 36863/59. Classes 96 and 140. A process for the production of a bonded fibre fleece comprises employing as a binder a copolymer derived from 1 to 20% by weight of an alpha-beta unsaturated carboxylic acid amide substituted on nitrogen by at least one methylol group, and 80 to 99% by weight of at least one other polymerizable compound, the fleece containing the binder being heated for a short time, e.g. 3 to 10 minutes, at over 60 C. Fibrous materials mentioned are cotton, rayon, cellulose acetate, wool, sisal, polyamides, polyvinyl chloride, polyacrylonitrile, polyterephthalic acid esters, rock wool, slag wool, glass fibres and asbestos fibres, and the polymerizable compound may be an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, e.g. acrylic and methacrylic acid esters, e.g. butyl acrylate, vinyl esters and ethers, styrene, acrylonitrile, and olefines, or mixtures thereof. The methylol compound may be N-methylolamide of acrylic, methacrylic or maleic acid. The binder may be applied as an aqueous emulsion or dispersion, or dissolved in an organic solvent, or strewn in the solid state on the fleece. If the binder is in liquid form, the heating operation may be in two stages, the first at 60 C. to 100 C., the second at 80 C. to 160 C. The fleece, prior to impregnating, may be formed by carding, and may be laminated so that the fibres in successive layers lie at an angle to each other, or a random arrangement of fibres may be employed, e.g. by suspending in water which is sucked off on a sieve. Impregnation may be carried out by spraying or soaking, and the liquid may be supplied between two fleeces as they are passed between two rollers under light pressure the fleeces having undergone a preliminary consolidation prior to impregnation. Compounds may be added to the binder to accelerate the reaction, e.g. phosphoric acid, paratoluenesulphonic acid, acetic acid, AlCl 3 , NH 4 NO 3 , NH 4 Cl, and ammonium oxalate, and soluble dyestuffs, colour pigments, plasticizers, stabilizers and optical brightening agents may be added to the binder. Four examples are described in detail and one describes the passing of the impregnated fleece through a bath consisting of melamine-urea precondensate and ammonium oxalate.

Abstract: Coated films and moulded articles of polyolefines are produced by subcoating the articles, whose surfaces have been pretreated with oxidising flames, oxidizing agents, by irradiation or by exposure to corona discharges, with polymers of ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable compounds, drying the subcoating, applying as top coating an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of 80 to 97% by weight of vinylidene chloride and 3 to 20% by weight of another copolymerizable mono-olefine monomer and drying said top coating, wherein as subcoating there is applied an emulsion copolymer of 90 to 98% by weight of at least one polymerizable monoolefinic unsaturated compound and 2 to 10% by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable N-alkylolamide compound. The N-alkylol-amide compound may be a N-methylolamide of a copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated acid having three to five carbon atoms. The subcoating may be an emulsion copolymer of 90 to 98% by weight of at least one mono olefinic monomer selected from copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated acids having three to five carbon atoms, their esters with alcohols having one to eight carbon atoms, their nitriles or amides, styrene, vinyl or vinylidene chloride, and vinyl esters of monocarboxylic acids having one to eighteen carbon atoms, and 2 to 10% by weight of at least one N-alkylolamide of a copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated acid having three to five carbon atoms e.g. 90 to 98% by weight of at least one ester of a copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated acid having three to five carbon atoms and an alcohol having one to eight carbon atoms and, possibly, at least one monomer selected from styrene, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, acrylonitrile, and methacrylonitrile and 2 to 10% by weight of at least one N-methylolamide of a copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated acid having three to five carbon atoms. The emulsion copolymer for the subcoating may have added to it 0.5 to 10% of its weight of at least one inorganic acid and/or organic acid and/or acid-reacting salts. The polyolefine may be a homopolymer or copolymer of monoolefins having 2 to 5 carbon atoms e.g. ethylene or propylene. The polyolefine may constitute a layer on a substrate e.g. nonwoven fabric, fabrics of natural and synthetic fibres, paper, cardboard, cotton cloth, and films or sheeting of semi-synthetic and synthetic materials. Solutions or dispersions of the copolymer of the subcoating may be applied by brushing, spraying, knife coating, rolling or trowelling.

Abstract: In the production of aqueous dispersions of solids and liquids there is used as a protective colloid 0,1-20% of the dispersed substance of a copolymer of 40-80 parts of at least one vinyl lactam and 60-20 parts of at least one vinyl ester of an aliphatic carboxylic acid having up to four carbon atoms, a part of said ester having been, if desired, saponified to or replaced by polyvinyl alcohol. Specified vinyl lactams are vinyl pyrrolidone, caprolactam and caprylic lactam. Specified vinyl esters are vinyl formate, acetate, propionate and butyrate. Specified dispersed substances are mineral and vegetable oils, bituminous substances, natural and synthetic waxes, paraffins, natural resins and plasticisers, but the invention is particularly applicable to the dispersion of synthetic polymers and condensation products (see Group IV(a)). In addition, Examples 14 and 16 specify as dispersed substances a chloroparaffin and montan wax. The protective colloids may if desired be added as an aqueous solution to the substances to be dispersed, and the latter may if desired be in the form of a solution in an organic solvent, to which the aqueous phase is added.ALSO:In the production of aqueous dispersions of solids and liquids there is employed as a protective colloid 0,1-20% of the dispersed substance of a colloidally soluble copolymer of 40-80 parts of at least one vinyl lactam and 60-20 parts of at least one vinyl ester of an aliphatic carboxylic acid having up to 4 carbon atoms, a part of said ester having been, if desired, saponified to or replaced by polyvinyl alcohol. Specified vinyl lactams are vinyl pyrrolidone, caprolactam and caprylic lactam; specified vinyl esters are vinyl formate, acetate, propionate and butyrate. Dispersed substances specified are mineral and vegetable oils, bituminous substances, natural and synthetic waxes, paraffins, natural resins and plasticizers (examples referring to montan wax and a chloroparaffin) and more particularly synthetic polymers and condensation products including polymerizable polyester resins and epoxy resins. In examples of the latter compounds, various combinations of the abovementioned copolymers are employed to disperse (Example 2) an epichlorhydrin/pentaerythritol condensation product (in this case the resultant dispersion can be hardened by addition of 4:41-diamino-3:31-dimethyldicyclohexylmethane to give a product containing firmly embedded water); (3) a highly viscous polyvinyl isobutyl ether; (4) a condensation product of diphenylolpropane and epichlorhydrin; (5) a polyester resin prepared from maleic acid (1 part), adipic acid (1 part), 1:4-butylene glycol (2 parts) and styrene (30%); (6) a polyester resin prepared from fumaric acid (2 parts), propylene glycol (3 parts) and styrene (65%); (7) a polyester resin prepared from maleic acid (1 part), phthalic acid (2 parts), diethylene glycol (3 parts), styrene (40%) and diallyl phthalate (20%); (8) a polyepoxy compound derived from butane triol and epichlorhydrin; (9) a polyvinyl ethyl ether; (10) a polyvinyl isobutyl ether; (11) two polyvinyl isobutyl ethers of different k-values; (12) a 1:1 mixture of butyl acrylate and vinyl acetate which are thereupon polymerized using 0,2% of potatassium persulphate as catalyst; (13) a resinous condensation product of cyclohexanone and methylcyclohexanone; (15) a phenol-formaldehyde resole; (17) polyisobutylene. The protective colloids may if desired be added to the components before polymerization or they may be added as an aqueous solution to the substances to be dispersed, and the latter may if desired be in solution in an organic solvent such as gasoline to which the aqueous phase is added. These procedures are exemplified in some of the examples mentioned above.

Abstract: A vibration-damping composition comprises (1) a filler which may be mica, vermiculite, kaolin, heavy spar, chalk or graphite, and (2) a thermoplastic binding agent consisting of a copolymer of a vinyl ester of a carboxylic acid with 2 to 4 carbon atoms and an unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon. The acid may be acetic, propionic or butyric acid. The hydrocarbon may be ethylene, propylene, butylene-(1), butylene-(2), isobutylene or butadiene. The copolymer may also contain 0,1 to 15% by weight of an unsaturated carboxylic acid such as acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, maleic, fumaric, or itaconic acids. Instead of these unsaturated carboxylic acids, it is also possible to use esters of maleic and/or fumaric and/or itaconic acids with linear or branched monohydric alcohols having 1 to 6 carbon atoms such as methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl, pentyl and hexyl alcohols. The copolymers can be prepared according to the usual emulsion polymerization processes using emulsifiers or protective colloids. Examples quoted contain vermiculite, china clay, or graphite as fillers and vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymers, vinyl acetate/ethylene/dibutyl fumarate copolymer, vinyl propionate/ethylene copolymer or vinyl propionate/ethylene/acrylic acid copolymer as the binding agent.
