Abstract: Proposed is an electrolytic method for the production of sodium and aluminium chloride in an electrolytic cell with an aluminium anode and a sodium cathode separated from each other by a sodium-ion-conducting solid electrolyte. In the anode region, molten electrolyte containing essentially sodium tetrachloroaluminate is electrolysed, the aluminium chloride produced being evaporated out of the cell and the sodium produced being tapped off from the cathode region.

Abstract: A gas-generating metal electrode comprises hollow profiled sections arranged parallel to one another in a horizontal plane and interconnected by a current distributor. The faces of the profiled sections facing the counterelectrode are curved, the curvature being greater at the sides than in the centre.
