    Abstract: Azo dyes of formula (I) are claimed. In (I) D is a radical of a diazo component; R is H, OH or (un)substd. alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, phenyl or heterocyclic ring; R1 and R2 are each H or (un)substd. alkyl alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl, or R1 and R2 together complete a satd. heterocyclic 5- to 7-membered ring; and X is H, Cl, Br, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, allyloxy, beta-cyanoethoxy, benzyloxy, phenoxy, beta-alkoxycarbonylethoxy, where alkoxy is of 1-4C, 1-4C alkylmercapto, phenylmercapto or 1-4C alkanoylamino, and Y is Cl, 1-4C alkyl, allyloxy, 1-4C alkoxy, beta-cyanoethoxy, or X and Y together form a fused benzene ring, the naphthalene nucleus thus formed opt. being substd. by alkyl, Cl or Br. (I) are esp. useful for dyeing and printing cotton and cotton-polyester blended fabrics in fast blue, violet or black shades with good colour strength light fastness and wet fastness.

The dyes are very useful for dyeing cellulose esters and synthetic polyesters; the dyeings obtained are from yellow to blue, and very fast.

    Abstract: A process for concentrating light over a particular area by means of fluorescent compounds in plastic plates or films, wherein the fluorescent compounds used are those of the formula or where Z is =N- or =CH-, Y is -OSO2R1, -OCOR1 or -OR3, or 2 Y together are where R is alkyl, X is fluorine, chlorine, C1-C20-alkyl, C3-C20-alkenyl, aralkyl, -COR1, -SO2R1, -OPO(OR2)2, -NH-COR1 or -NH-SO2-R1, m is 2, 3 or 4, n is 0, 1 or 2, R1 is unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, alkenyl or an aromatic or heteroaromatic radical and, when Y is -OCOR1, may furthermore be alkoxy or cycloalkoxy, R2 is alkyl or cycloalkyl and R3 is alkyl, alkenyl, C2- or C3-alkylenecarboalkoxy, alkyl-substituted benzyl or cyclohexyl or a monocyclic, bicyclic or polycyclic saturated hydrocarbon radical. Some of the compounds I and II are new. The compounds I and II exhibit fluorescence in the range from 580 to 750 nm, and have a very high fluorescent quantum efficiency, particularly good light fastness and high thermostability.
