Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of compounds of the formula I in which the substituents Hal, independently of one another, are chlorine or bromine, and the ring A may be substituted, which is characterised in that compounds of the formula II in which Hal is as defined above, and n may be 0, 1 or 2, are reacted at elevated temperature with a chlorinating agent in solvents which cannot be halogenated under the reaction conditions. The compounds obtained from the process are suitable as redox catalysts or dye precursors.
