Abstract: The molecular weight of alpha-olefin polymers is regulated by polymerizing the olefin, in a hydrocarbon solvent, using a catalyst composed of a compound of a transition metal, and an organometallic compound of Groups I to III of the Periodic Table, wherein a suspension of the catalyst in a hydrocarbon solvent is treated with hydrogen, in a reservoir, at a hydrogen partial pressure of from 0.001 to 10 atmospheres before the catalyst suspension is supplied to the polymerization vessel. The hydrogen may be mixed with an inert gas. The alpha-olefin may be propylene, butene-1, or 4-methylpentene-1, and mixtures. The catalyst TiCl3, or 3TiCl3.AlCl3, and diethylaluminium chloride is preferred. The product is separated into fractions using boiling heptane.

Abstract: Molten polyolefins having a molecular weight of between 1,000 and 50,000 are oxidized with oxygen or oxygen-containing gas under increased pressure and at a temperature between 130 DEG and 250 DEG C. until 0.5 to 25 kg of oxygen has been absorbed for each 100 kg of polyolefin and the oxidation is carried out with intense agitation with an agitator output of from 1 to 15 kilowatts per 100 kg of polyolefin. Polyolefins exemplified are polyethylene, polypropylene, and a copolymer of ethylene and carbon monoxide containing between 1 and 3 carbonyl groups per 50 ethylene groups. The materials may be made by thermally degrading high molecular weight polyolefins. The products are easily emulsifiable waxes.

Abstract: Linear polyolefines which have been prepared by the polymerization of olefines containing two to four carbon atoms using as catalysts heavy metals of Group IV(a), V(a), or VI(a) of the Mendelleeff Periodic System are simultaneously purified and thermally degraded by dissolving or swelling the polyolefine in an inert organic solvent and heating the solution in the presence of oxygen or oxygen-supplying compounds for 15 to 200 minutes at a temperature between 70 DEG and 240 DEG C. Optionally the heat-treatment may be effected in the presence of 2 to 20% of water and in the presence of such an amount of an alkaline compound that the pH in the aqueous solution after the heat-treatment step is 6 to 7. Substances which have a large internal surface on to which impurities are absorbed may be added to the polymers before, during, or after the heat-treatment. Suitable substances are carbon, aluminium oxide, bleaching earths, and kieselguhr. The linear polymers may be polyethylene, polypropylene, or copolymers of ethylene and/or propylene and/or butene-1. Specified solvents are tetra- or decahydro-naphthalene, cyclohexane, benzene, toluene, xylene, and ethylbenzene. The oxygen-supplying compounds may be peroxides. Alkaline compounds which may be included in the heat-treatment step are ammonia, sodium, potassium, or calcium hydroxide, hydroxylamine or aniline.
