Abstract: A process for the combustion of sulphur with gases containing free oxygen in the combustion chamber of a sulphur burner is characterized by intermittent injection of liquid sulphur into the combustion chamber so that the combustion proceeds in the form of explosions and the resonance frequency of the gas column oscillating in the combustion chamber is equal to or is a whole multiple of the injection frequency of the sulphur. In the apparatus of the Figure, liquid sulphur is injected into chamber 1 through nozzle 2 surrounded by combustion gas valves 4 advantageously arranged equidistantly from said nozzle. The injection frequency of the sulphur is controlled, e.g. by varying the speed of a continuously variable electric motor driving the injection pump. The chamber cross-section is provided with successive constrictions and enlargements, preferably at regular intervals. Explosions are initiated by an incandescent wire 7 or by an igniting flame arranged in front of nozzle 2, imparting a strong acceleration away from the nozzle to the sample, and thereby drawing in fresh combustion gas through the valves 4, and when the reflection of the exploding gas causes maximum compression of the fresh combustion gas further liquid sulphur is injected therein. Combustion products leave the chamber through diffuser 5 and pipe 6.
