Abstract: Vinyl cyclohexane polymers of molecular weights from 10,000 to 2,000,000 are produced by hydrogenating in the liquid phase with hydrogen a homopolymer, copolymer or graft polymer of styrene or a mixture of polymers containing polystyrene of molecular weights from 10,000 to 2,000,000 at 50 DEG -270 DEG C. and a pressure of 10-1,000 atmospheres in the presence of a supported catalyst containing 0,01-95% of a Group VIII metal with an atomic weight exceeding 58, e.g. Ni, Co, Ru, Rh, Pd or Pt. The polystyrene may be prepared by thermal or ionic polymerization of styrene, e.g. in emulsion or suspension. Copolymers may contain butadiene, isobutylene, vinyl toluene, a methylstyrene, divinylbenzenes, ethylene, propylene, acrylic or methacrylic esters, vinyl esters or ethers, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, N-vinylcarbazole and/or mixtures. Hydrogenation is carried out using a melt or solution of the polymer, e.g. 5-25%, with hydrocarbons and/or saturated ethers or alcohols, e.g. cyclohexane, tetrahydrofurane, benzene. Carriers for the catalyst may be porous substances, e.g. C, Al2O3, pumice, kieselguhr, silica gel, and promoters, e.g. Cr, Cu, Mn or cerium oxide, may be used for Ni and Co catalysts. The process may be continuous, e.g. using a suspended catalyst which may be recycled. The vinyl cyclohexane may be pressed into sheets or moulded.

Abstract: Unsaturated hydrocarbons are produced by the pyrolysis of liquid hydrocarbons by spreading out the liquid hydrocarbon on the inner wall of a cylindrical or part conical chamber by means of a propellant gas introduced tangentially at 50-300 metres/sec. and at a temperature which does not effect appreciable cracking and passing a hot gas axially through the chamber cocurrently with the liquid hydrocarbon feed to effect pyrolysis. The liquid hydrocarbon may be a gasoline boiling in the range 80-220 DEG C., a middle oil boiling in the range 90-350 DEG C. or a higher boiling petroleum fraction and is introduced tangentially or radially. The propellant gas may be steam at 200-400 DEG C. mixed, if desired, with nitrogen or carbon dioxide, or hydrogen or carbon monoxide together with oxygen to provide the desired temperature, in amounts of 10-80% by volume of the steam, the total gas amounting to 0.2-1 kg. per kg. of hydrocarbon. The cracking gas may be hot steam, nitrogen or carbon dioxide or a combustion product at 800-1500 DEG C. The pressure may be 2-30 excess atmospheres. The product which may contain ethylene, propylene or acetylene is quenched with water or by decompression.

Abstract: Unsaturated hydrocarbons, particularly ethylene, are produced by cracking liquid hydrocarbons by introducing the liquid hydrocarbon into a cylindrical reaction vessel close to the wall, introducing oxygen or an oxygencontaining gas tangentially close to the point of introduction of the hydrocarbon at a high speed sufficient to prevent a detachment from the inner wall of the vortex produced which is aided by passing the reaction gases through a conically-formed constriction and thence through either a cylindrical vessel or a vessel which first widens conically and is then preferably cylindrical. A mixture of oxygen and steam, combustion gas and/or recycle gas from tubes 4 and 5 is introduced through channel 6 and slot 3 at 80-200 metres per second faster than a petroleum fraction which is introduced through tube 7 under a slight excess pressure of 500-1000 mm. water. The gases pass from vessel 1 into vessel 2 through a conical constriction and the conical vessel 10 which preferably has a cone angle below 10 degrees. The products are quenched at 11. The reactor may be preheated by a combustion gas introduced at 9.

Abstract: Heat-resistant tyre-cord filaments are made by melt spinning base-polymerized lactams from which monomers, oligomers and water-soluble alkaline catalysts may have been solvent-extracted with water or methanol. Alternatively the spinning of the polymerized lactam may follow immediately after its having been polymerized. Suitable lactams comprise all lactams of o -aminocarboxylic acids with rings of more than six members which can be converted into polyamides by means of alkaline reaction initiators, e.g. caprolactam, o-nantholactam, caprylolactam, o -aminopelargonolactam, o -aminocaproyllactam, o -aminoundecanolactam or laurolactam. The bases used for the initiation and continuation of the polymerization may be alkali metals, alkali metal carbonates, alkali metal amides or alkali metal lactams. In an example, a caprolactam containing 0.4% of sodium and a caprolactam containing 3% of pyrrolidone-n-carboxylic acid anilide are fed at the same rate at 100 DEG C. to an extruder heated in zones from 140 to 270 DEG C,, mixed, polymerized and melt spun. The filaments thus obtained have a Fikentscher K-value of 74 and contain 9.6% of water-extractable components. They may be cold or hot drawn either before or after the extraction of the water-soluble components. In the other example 1,500 parts of caprolactam containing 17 parts of potassium and 3,414 parts of caprolactam containing 76 parts of bis-caprolactam-n-carboxylic acid hexamethylene-diamine-1.6 are mixed and polymerized to form a polycaprolactam having a K-value of 127 and a melting range of 215-220 DEG C. The polymer is found to soften less with increase in temperature up to 190 DEG C. than nylon 6.6 having a melting range of 250-255 DEG C. Specification 919,246 is referred to.
