Abstract: In the production of acetylene by the partial oxidation of hydrocarbons having molecular weights in the range 60-110, the separately preheated hydrocarbon and oxygen reactants are mixed in a mixer with a residence period below 0.1 second, then passed through a gas distributing block into a reaction chamber, the velocity of the gas mixture immediately before entering the gas distributer being more than 5 metres per second, preferably more than 10 meters per second. Times and speeds relate to conditions at 0 DEG C. and 760 mm. The speed of the gases through the channels of the gas distributer is usually above 20 metres per second. Preferably a hydrogen-containing gas is added to the hydrocarbon, e.g. residual gas from the process. By introducing additional gaseous or liquid hydrocarbon into the reaction zone ethylene is also formed. The process is particularly applicable to the partial oxidation of naphthas, and the preheating temperature may be 600 DEG C.

Abstract: In the production of acetylene by subjecting hydrocarbons to high temperatures, the hot gas is quenched in a single stage by injecting a hydrocarbon oil boiling above 150 DEG C. in a volume ratio to gas (measured under standard conditions) of at least 1 : 100 without any appreciable cracking of the oil and separating the hot oil containing carbon black from the gas. The oil is preferably an aromatic oil and useful heat is extracted from it before its reuse; the carbon black content is preferably reduced to below 35% by weight e.g. by removing part of the oil and replacing this by fresh oil. The gas is preferably also later washed with an oil boiling in the range 80-450 DEG C. having a specific gravity below 0.95. The examples relate to the partial combustion of gasoline and of methane; reference is also made to heating hydrocarbons by electric discharge and exposure to hot flame gases. Abstract: In the production of acetylene and ethylene by the incomplete combustion of a hydrocarbon, a further amount of the same or a different hydrocarbon is added to the reaction mixture at a point before the oxygen in the mixture is used up prior to that at which the maximum temperature would have been reached, followed by quenching with water. The first hydrocarbon may be a C1-C12 hydrocarbon, the second, the same or different liquid or vaporous C1-C12 hydrocarbon added in an amount of 10-80% by weight of the reaction gas. The gas is thereby cooled to 500 DEG -1200 DEG C.

Abstract: Sulphur-containing gaseous hydrocarbons or gases containing the same are reacted continuously and flamelessly with an amount of oxygen which is insufficient for complete combustion and with the optional co-employment of steam and/or carbon dioxide to form carbon monoxide and hydrogen in two stages, a part of the hydrocarbon being burnt over a catalyst consisting of a metal of the platinium group applied to a carrier of a -ilumina in a first stage and the remainder of the hydrocarbon being reacted endothermically with steam and carbon dioxide in a second stage. The catalyst may be prepared either by impregnating a -ilumina with an aqueous solution of platinum chloride at room temperature followed by decomposition in situ or by calcination of a -alumina at temperatures of about 1000 DEG C. or more followed by treatment with an aqueous solution of platinum chloride or chloroplatinic acid. Sources of sulphur-containing gaseous hydrocarbons are natural gas, coke oven gas and other methane-containing gases. Suitable second-stage catalysts are nickel or alumina, magnesia or zirconia. An example is given.

The sum of the free crosssectional areas of holes in each of the perforated plates may be 30-90% of the free cross-sectional area in each of the channels. The thickness of the perforated plate 3 may be 0À5-10% of the lengths of the channels 2.
