Abstract: Crude aqueous solutions of glyoxal are purified by contacting the solution with an anion-exchange resin containing tertiary amino or quaternary ammonium groups in the bicarbonate salt form. The process is especially suitable for purification of crude glyoxal solutions such as are obtained by oxidation of acetaldehyde with aqueous nitric acid or by catalytic dehydrogenation of ethylene glycol. Comparative examples describe the purification of crude aqueous glyoxal solutions by the use of active carbon or by treatment with calcium carbonate.

Abstract: The sailing of metallic heat exchange or heat transfer surfaces during the heating of crude benzoles or other light oils rich in aromatics and/or olefines derived from the coking, low temperature carbonization, gasification or cracking of solid or liquid fuels in the liquid phase, is inhibited by the addition of an oil-soluble salt of a sulphonic acid or a thiophosphoric acid ester. The preferred salts are those of the alkali metals, the alkaline earth metals, Zn, Al, Sn and ammonium and also salts of the acid or ester with basic organic nitrogen compounds such as alkylamines, alicyclic amines and pyridines. The additives should contain at least 6 hydrocarbon radicals and 2-200 gms. of additive per metric ton of oil is suitable.ALSO:The soiling of metallic heat exchange or heat transfer surfaces during the heating of crude benzoles or other light oils rich in aromatics and/or olefines derived from the coking, low temperature carbonization, gasification or cracking of solid or liquid fuels in the liquid phase, is inhibited by the addition of an oil soluble salt of a sulphonic acid or a thiophosphoric acid ester.
