    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for continuously producing cross-linked, fine-particle geleous polymerizates by copolymerizing: a) water-soluble, monoethylenically unsaturated monomers; b) 0.001 to 5 mol %, with regard to monomers (a), of monomers containing at least two ethylenically unsaturated double bonds, and; (c) 0 to 20 mol %, with regard to monomers (a), of water- insoluble monoethylenically unsaturated monomers in 20 to 80 wt. % of an aqueous solution in the presence of an initiator and at temperatures ranging from 0 to 140 ~C, whereby the aqueous solution of the monomers, together wit h the initiator and an inert gas, are continuously fed to a kneader-mixer havi ng at least two shafts which rotate parallel to the axis. A number of kneading and transport elements are situated on the shafts and deliver the substances , which are added at the entry to the kneader-mixer, in an axial direction to the end of the mixer. The inventive method is characterized in that the proportion of the heat dissipation effected by evaporating water out of the reaction mixture equals at least 5 % of the reaction heat, and the proportio n of the heat dissipation effected by product discharge equals at least 25 % o f the reaction heat, and the remaining heat dissipation is effected by cooling the reactor walls.

A process for preparation of low odor hydrogel-forming polymerisate based on acrylic acid including the steps; (a) preparation of a polymeric hydrogel by radical polymerization of at least 50 wt.% of acrylic acid containing monomer composition in an aqueous polymerization medium and conversion of the hydrogel into a particulate hydrogel or a hydrogel forming powder, and optionally treatment of these with a crosslinking substance having at least two latent functional groups reactive to the polymerisate carboxyl groups, where in step (a) the acrylic acid contains at least 500 ppm of acrylic acid oligomer.

    Abstract: neutralized acrylic acid solution suitable for polymer production is obtained from crude acrylic acid from the gas-phase oxidation of propene and/or propane by dissolution in aqueous alkali hydroxide and extraction of impurities with water-immiscible solvent. A method for the production of aqueous, partly or completely neutralized acrylic acid (I) solution suitable for the production of polymers, starting from the reaction gas (II) from the catalytic gas-phase oxidation of propene and/or propane with oxygen or from the crude product (III) obtained after working up the gas (II). The method involves: (i) absorption of (II) or (III) in sufficient aqueous alkali hydroxide solution for at least 90% neutralization of (I), or mixing (III) with sufficient alkali solution; (ii) extraction of the alkali acrylate solution with water-immiscible solvent(s); and (iii) separating the aqueous raffinate from the extract and optionally adjusting to the required degree of neutralization. An Independent claim is also included for a method for the production of acrylic acid-based superabsorbers by radical polymerisation of an aqueous monomer composition containing at least 50 wt% neutralized (I) and optionally up to 50 wt.% comonomer(s) (B) and/or up to 30 wt.% crosslinkers (C) (obtained by adding B and/or C to the above solution of pure I) to give a hydrogel, converting this into a hydrogel-forming powder and optionally surface-crosslinking the powder.
