Abstract: Disclosed herein is a foam ply based on a biodegradable polyester mixture, comprising: i) Substantially from 70 to 5% by weight, based on the total weight of components i) to ii), of at least one polyester based aliphatic and aromatic dicarboxylic acids and on aliphatic dihydroxy compound, and ii) Substantially from 30 to 95% by weight, based on the total weight of components i) to ii), of polylactide, and iii) from 0.1 to 5% by weight, based on the total weight of components i) to ii), of a copolymer which comprises epoxy groups and is based on styrene, acrylates, and/or methacrylates, and iv) from 0.5 to 3% by weight, based on the total weight of components i) to ii), of a nucleating agent selected from the group comprising talc, chalk, carbon black, graphite, calcium stearate, zinc stearate, poly-D-lactic acid, N,N'-ethylenebis-12-hydroxystearamide and polyglycolic acid, and v) from 0 to 50% by weight of inorganic or organic filler. Also disclosed is a process for the production of said foam ply comprising a) mixing, in an extruder at from 160 to 2200C, a biodegradable polyester mixture of components i)-v) as recited above; b) injecting from 1 to 25% by weight of a physical blowing agent in the form of a gas under pressure, and c) cooling and extruding to give the foam ply and, if appropriate, thermoforming in a thermoforming apparatus.
