Abstract: Provided herein is a barium sulfate-containing catalyst carrier. The catalyst carrier is useful for supporting an exhaust gas purification catalyst, such as a three way conversion catalyst. In an embodiment, the carrier comprises BaSO4/thermally stable alumina. Further provided is a process for preparing the catalyst carrier, with or without precious metals, comprising treating a barium oxide/alumina or barium carbonate/alumina with a stoichiometric amount of sulfuric acid (H2SO4), thus forming BaSO4/alumina in situ in good yield and at low cost.

Abstract: Described are catalysts effective to abate NOx, hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide from a gasoline engine exhaust gas. Such catalysts include a substrate having a first and second material disposed thereon, the first material effective to catalyze selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides in the presence of ammonia and the second material effective to abate hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, the first material comprising a molecular sieve promoted with copper and/or iron in a low loading, the second material comprising at least one oxide of Ni, Fe, Mn, Co, and Cu on a support selected from oxides of Ce, Ce—Zr, Zr, Mn, Pr and combinations thereof. Also described are gasoline engine exhaust gas treatment systems and methods of treating exhaust gas from a gasoline engine.

Abstract: Provided are automotive catalyst composites having a catalytic material on a carrier, wherein the catalytic material comprises at least two layers. The first layer is deposited directly on the carrier and comprises a first palladium component supported on a first refractory metal oxide component, a first oxygen storage component, or a combination thereof. The second layer is deposited on top of the first layer and comprises a rhodium component supported on a second refractory metal oxide component and a second palladium component supported on a second oxygen storage component, a third refractory metal oxide component or a combination thereof. Generally these catalyst composites are used as three-way conversion (TWC) catalysts. Methods of making and using the same are also provided.

Abstract: Catalysts that improve carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) light-off performance are provided. A catalyst composite for combustion engines, as provided herein, comprises a carrier and a first layer comprising a catalytic material on the carrier, the catalytic material comprising a palladium component supported on both a ceria-praseodymia-based oxygen storage component and a ceria-zirconia-based oxygen storage component, wherein the first layer is essentially free of alumina. The catalytic material is effective to substantially simultaneously oxidize carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons and reduce nitrogen oxides.
