    Abstract: Disclosed is a single mode optical waveguide fiber having a segmented core in which the central segment is a void (16). The shape and radial extent of the core segments are selected to provide a low dispersion slope together with large effective area and good bend resistance. Embodiments of the refractive index profiles in accord with the invention are shown having two or three annular segments (2, 6, 8) surrounding the central void. The presence of the void provides the benefits of a negative relative index located centrally in the core region without the process difficulties associated with the use of dopants that decrease the refractive index of the waveguide fiber.

    Abstract: An optical cross-connect system provides 4X4 switching matrices and self- healing from any single point of failure. The switching matrices route worki ng traffic and redundant protection traffic between a plurality of client netwo rk elements and an optical ring. The system also has a client interface for transporting the working traffic and the protection traffic between the switching matrices and the client network elements. The optical cross-connec t system further includes a ring interface for transporting the working traffi c and the protection traffic between the switching matrices and the optical ring. The switching matrices are structured so that protection is provided from single point failures by electrical switching at the client network element location. This significantly reduces the need for optical switching within the matrices.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a single mode optical waveguide fiber having a relatively large effective area and good bend resistance. The waveguide fiber is characterized by a segmented core having a central segment and at least one annular segment surrounding the central segment. At least one segment has a negative relative index where the reference index is taken as the minimum index of the core. The total dispersion of the fiber is positive for wavelengths above about 1500 nm, dispersion slope is typically less than about 0.08 ps/nm2-km, and induced attenuation under pin array bend testing is typically less than 5 dB/km.
