Abstract: The optical fibers disclosed is a single mode optical fiber comprising a core region and a cladding region surrounding and directly adjacent to the core region. The core region can have a radius r1 in a range from 3 μm to 7 μm and a relative refractive index profile Δ1 having a maximum relative refractive index Δ1max in the range from 0.25% to 0.50%. The cladding region can include a first outer cladding region and a second outer cladding region surrounding and directly adjacent to the first outer cladding region. The first outer cladding region can have a radius r4a. The second outer cladding region can have a radius rob less than or equal to 45 μm and comprising silica based glass doped with titania.

Abstract: A method for making oligomers is described. The method includes reacting a polyol with a precursor having mixed functionality. The precursor includes a curable functional group and an isocyanate group capable of reacting with an alcohol group of the polyol. The precursor reacts with the alcohol group of the polyol to form a urethane linkage and to add a covalently bonded curable functional group to the polyol. Abstract: A furnace may include a furnace muffle that can accommodate relatively larger workpieces than other furnaces. The furnace muffle may include a cover that includes one or more sets of plates. The plates may be configured to prevent sag during extended runtimes while still enabling the furnace to reach a temperature (e.g., a temperature between 1590° C. and 1650° C.) for sintering a workpiece. In some examples, the cover may include a first set of plates of a first material (e.g., a first alumina refractory material) and a second set of plates of a second material (e.g., a second alumina refractory material). The second material may have greater thermal conductivity than the first material. Accordingly, plates of the second set may be located in higher temperature zones of the furnace to enable efficient heat transfer from heater elements through the furnace muffle to a contact plate where a workpiece is heated.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides coating compositions that can be cured at fast rates as well as coatings and cured products formed from the coating compositions. The coating compositions include an acylgermane photoinitiator that leads to fast cure speeds. The coating compositions include primary coating compositions and secondary coating compositions. The coating compositions can be cured to form primary and secondary coatings of optical fibers. The primary coatings feature low Young's modulus and high tear strength. The primary coatings provide good microbending performance and are resistant to defect formation during the fiber draw process and subsequent handling operations. The secondary coatings feature high Young's modulus and good puncture resistance.
