Abstract: 962,891. Cold cathode tubes. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. March 21, 1963 [March 30, 1962], No. 11214/63. Heading H1D. A cold cathode triode has a target constructed by vaporizing on a fine support grid 8, a thin layer 9, e.g. 0.5 to 2.0 microns of dielectric such as zinc sulphide having induced conductivity and a high coefficient of multiplication and by subsequently metallizing one insulating surface with a conductive layer 10, e.g. of aluminium 0.03 to 0.1 microns thick. Disposed on the other insulating surface are two metallizations 11, 12 forming an interdigital comb, one part 11 of which forms a grid and the other 12 an anode. The grid 11 receives its signal through a capacitor 14 and the output is taken through another capacitor 14. The cathode comprises an array of small points 5 of tungsten or zirconium carbide mounted on a metallic base 4 which is connected to a source of negative potential, say -10 kv. to - 30 kv. Ceramic rings 1, 2 and cover 3 complete the enclosure which support a mounting 7 for the target. Electrons from the points 5 traverse the metallization 10 and penetrate into the insulating layer 9 where secondary electrons are liberated which flow through the anode 12. The quantity of secondary electrons is controlled by the grid 11. Specification 962,083 is referred to.

Abstract: A target for ultrasonic camera comprising, applied to a substrate, a pyroelectric retina covered, in the present example, with a layer which absorbs incident ultrasonic waves; the temperature rise due to said absorption produces in the retina a charge relief read out by means which depend upon the selected device, for example an electron beam as in the case of the known pyroelectric targets.

Abstract: 1,022,274. Cathode-ray storage image intensifiers. CSF-COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Feb. 11, 1964 [Feb. 15, 1963], No. 5616/64. Heading H1D. An optical or infra-red image is both intensified and its contrast increased by using a photocathode to produce first a fast electron image which impinges upon a mesh storage grid to produce a charge pattern image thereon, and subsequently to produce a slow electron image which is passed through the meshes of the storage grid on to a luminescent screen, whereby an approximately square low response is obtained. Storage grid 6, 7, formed by a wire grid coated with dielectric secondary electron emissive material, is first stabilized at the potential-earth-of the photo-cathode 2, which is flooded by a light source 12 to provide a uniform slow electron stream passing through focussing electrodes 3, 4 and accelerating grid 5, and then by the application of a positive pulse 11, left 10 volts negative with respect to the photo-cathode. Light 12 is switched off and image 13 projected on to the photocathode, which is connected to the- 2kv. supply to provide a high velocity electron image on the storage grid. The photo-cathode is then again earthed, with image 13 still incident upon it, whereby a slow electron image is projected through the apertures of the storage grid to produce an optical image on the metallized luminescent screen 8. The storage grid may, alternatively, employ dielectric material which exhibits, instead or additionally, bombardment induced conductivity, e.g. magnesium or zinc fluoride. A series of intensifiers as above may be operated in cascade, or may be constructed with the luminescent screen of one formed on the same plate as the photocathode of the next.

Abstract: 931,384. Discharge tubes. CSF-COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE FIL. Dec. 13, 1961 [Dec. 21, 1960], No. 44595/61. Class 39 (1). A photo-cathode structure 1, e.g. for use in a cathode-ray tube 11, itself comprises a gaseous discharge tube, the gaseous discharge exciting either directly or through a fluorescent coating applied to the inner wall of the container, the photo-emissive coating 8 provided on the front surface of an, e.g. glass, window 3. The photo-emissive coating is deposited on a thin transparent conductive film. The gaseous discharge, which may be pulsed, is set up between the wall of the container and a metal rod electrode 5 traversing a glass or ceramic wall 4. The gas filling may be argon, neon or hydrogen at 10 -3 mm. Hg.
