    Abstract: The tube allows the ambient temp. of the target to be controlled and stabilised in the range 40 to 60 degrees C. With this facility, a range of pyro-electric materials can be used at maximum sensitivity. Similar or greater sensitivity can be obtained with materials such as deuterated tri-glycine sulphate and tri-glycine fluoroberrylate held at their optimum temps. than is achieved with the commonly used tri-glycine sulphate. An insulated heating element is double-wound on a cylindrical electrode which serves to sweep and concentrate the electron beam. A metal sheath conducts heat to a field grid adjacent to the target. The target temp. distribution can be adjusted by the presence of a number of high-emissivity coating strips and a high degree of uniformity achieved. The internal face of the partition electrode is covered by a high thermal emissivity material.

    Abstract: A method and a device for analyzing a pyroelectric target in an evacuated envelope. The target with two opposite faces has a first face disposed towards a zone of the envelope which is transparent to an incident radiation. The second face is orientated towards an electron gun generating device which operates at least one electron beam. A first scanning of the pyroelectric target with a high intensity low resolution electron beam allows a stage of neutralization of the electron charges induced in the target by the incident radiation. The stage of neutralization is to be considered as effecting a storage of the signal recorded on the target. A second scanning of the pyroelectric target with an electron beam of high resolution and low intensity corresponds to a stage of read-out proper of the target. The device is provided, on the one hand, with circuits for the control of the intensity of emission of the electron beam and, on the other hand, with circuits for the control of the voltage applied to the pyroelectric target, positive boosts of potentials being applied to the target during the stage of neutralization and read out proper. A common control circuit controlled by a synchronization signal representing the emission recurrences signals of the incident radiation controls the circuits for the control of the intensity of emission of the electron beam and the circuit for the control of the voltage applied to the target.

    Abstract: A pyroelectric radiation detector which is relatively immune to the effects of microphonic vibrations includes within an evacuated envelope a triglycine sulphate (TGS) target secured by silicone grease to a thin (3-6 mu M) mica support plate. The mica support plate is adhesively secured by means of an enamel to a titanium annulus which, in turn, is epoxied to the window of the evacuated envelope. The coefficients of expansion of the annulus and the support plate are selected such that after they are joined on to the other the support plate is stretched tightly across the annulus and therefore has a natural period substantially higher than the natural period of the annulus which supports it.

    Abstract: A potential compensating device for resistive sensors of pyroelectric tubes uses an ionic effect. The sensors are swept by a beam of electrons emitted by the cathode of the tube. The sensor then has a front face at an electric potential different from the potential of its back face. The back face potential varies according to the intensity of thermal rays received. The front face of the sensor is bombarded by ions which result from collisions between gas molecules and beam electrons. The ions then raise the potential of points of the front face of the sensor. The compensating bombardment is carried out during a phase different from the measuring phase. The measuring phases and the compensating phases alternate during operation of the tube. The device enables the back face of the sensor to be at a higher potential than the one obtained without its use.
