    Abstract: 773,708. Travelling-wave tubes. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. March 25, 1955 [March 25, 1954], No. 8865/55. Class 39(1). In a backward wave oscillator tube a first electron beam interacts with a first wave component of negative phase velocity and a second electron beam travelling in the opposite direction to the first beam interacts with a wave-component of positive phase velocity so as to amplify it, the arrangement being such that the power output is maintained constant over a wide frequency band. The backward wave output power obtained from beam 4, Fig. 1, increases with the frequency while the forward wave output power obtained from beam 5 decreases when the frequency increases so that by suitable design these two effects compensate one another and the output power can be left constant over the broad electronic tuning band. In Fig. 1, 8 is an interdigital delay line 13 the output coaxial line feeder, 16 an absorbtive termination of colloidal graphite electronic tuning is achieved by varying the velocity of beam 4, by variable tap on battery 18 ; the velocity of beam 5, however, can be kept constant as its phase velocity frequency curve is almost a horizontal straight line, Fig. 3a (not shown) envelope 1, gun anodes 2 , 3 , collectors 6, 7 and delay line 8 are all earthed. The wave components utilised for interaction with the beams 4, 5 are a negative fundamental and a positive first or other space harmonic respectively. In a modification, Fig. 4, beam 4 interacts with a fundamental wave of negative phase velocity in the central zone of the line and two beams 5, 5 travelling in the reverse direction interact with a fundamental wave of positive phase velocity. The beams 5, 5 are disposed, at parts of the interdigital line removed from the longitudinal central plane at a position where the wave has a positive fundamental and a negative spatial harmonic component while beam 4 is disposed where there is a fundamental of negative phase velocity and is first spatial harmonic of positive phase velocity, the dispersion curve of the part of the line where beams 5, 5 pass being shown in Fig. 3B. The invention can also be applied to travelling wave tubes with crossed electric and magnetic fields, as described with reference to Figs. 5, 6 (not shown).
