Abstract: A high purity acetic acid is prepared by reacting methanol with carbon monoxide in the presence of a rhodium catalyst, iodide salts, and methyl iodide, wherein an acetaldehyde concentration in the reaction liquid is maintained at 400 ppm or lower. This may be attained by contacting the liquid containing carbonyl impurities with water to separate and remove the carbonyl impurities. After that, the liquid can be returned to the reactor.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high-quality polyester polymer continuously without encountering many difficulties resulting from an increase in the viscosity of the reaction mixture by using a tower-type continuous reactor in the production of a high-molecular-weight polyester polymer by ring opening polymerization. SOLUTION: A polymerization material comprising at least one lactone is fused in an inert gas atmosphere, continuously fed into a tower-type continuous reactor and polymerized through ring opening to continuously produce a polyester polymer. If required for the purpose of e.g. viscosity control, at most 20 pts.wt., per 100 pts.wt. polymerization component, solvent is added, and the reaction is performed. After the polymerization, the residual monomer and/or the solvent are removed from the formed polymer by means of a devolatilizer contiguous to the reactor and recovered. Alternatively, a polymerization material comprising a cyclic ester formed from two molecules of at least one hydroxycarboxylic acid and at least one polymer having hydroxyl groups and/or ester bonds is continuously fed into a tower-type continuous reactor and copolymerized to continuously produced a polyester polymer.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently obtain acetic acid useful in petrochemical industry and organic chemical industry by a simple method by introducing ozone into a distillation column and distilling acetic acid containing impurities while bringing ozone into contact with the acetic acid. SOLUTION: In the method for purifying acetic acid containing organic halides (n-butyl iodide, etc.) obtained by a carbonylation reaction of one or more selected from among methanol, methyl acetate and methyl ether and carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst containing a metal of the group VIII (e.g. rhodium catalyst in 200-1,000ppm in a reaction solution), 5-20wt.% of methyl iodide in the reaction solution and water at 150-250 deg.C under 2-30a atmospheric pressure, >= about 1ppm of ozone based on the weight of the acetic acid to be treated is introduced into a distillation column and the acetic acid is distilled while bringing ozone into contact with the acetic acid containing impurities in an ordinary retention time to give high-purity acetic acid useful as a fundamental chemical.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove iodine compound(s) in an organic medium by using an ion exchange resin and by operation through raising temperature stepwise. SOLUTION: Iodine compound(s) in an organic medium, esp. acetic acid or its mixture with acetic anhydride is brought into contact with a cation exchange resin with at least 1% of its active sites exchanged with silver or mercury sites in the following way in the 1st step, while maintaining the outflow of the silver or mercury at low levels at 17-35 deg.C for the time of the organic medium's passage through the resin bed; in the 2nd step, the temperature is raised by 10 deg.C or so; in the 3rd step, the temperature is raised to about 55 deg.C; thereafter, the above practice is repeated. Owing to this method of operation, alkyl iodide removing efficiency, resin service life and the use efficiency co the silver or mercury can be significantly improved while suppressing resin deterioration and the outflow of the silver or mercury to minimum levels.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the title resin having excellent hydrolysis resistance in an economically advantageous manner, by polymerizing epsilon-caprolactone in the presence of a specified alcoholic hydroxyl group-containing aminoalcohol compound. CONSTITUTION:A poly-epsilon-caprolactone resin obtained by polymerizing epsilon- caprolactone in the presence of 0.01-5.0pts.wt. alcoholic hydroxyl group- containing aminoalcohol compound of the formula, wherein R and R are each a 1-18C alkyl and R3 and R4 are each H or a 1-18C alkyl. The poly-epsilon- caprolactone resin is produced by opening an epsilon-caprolactone ring by heating the monomer to 120-220 deg.C in the presence of an initiator and a catalyst. The MW of the poly-epsilon-caprolactone resin is controlled by varying the amount of the initiator used. Examples of the initiators which can be suitably used include water, ethylene glycol and 1,6-hexanediol.
