Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ketone from the corresponding secondary alcohol at a high conversion and a high selectivity. SOLUTION: This ketone compound is obtained by oxidizing the corresponding secondary alcohol having at least secondary hydroxy group in the presence of a reducing inorganic compound or acid, with bromic acid or its salt, at >=40 deg.C to convert the secondary hydroxy group to oxo group. The ratio of the bromic acid or its salt is less than 1 chemical equivalent based on the secondary hydroxy group and the ratio of the reducing inorganic compound or acid is 0.01-0.9 chemical equivalent based on the bromic acid. When a polyhydric alcohol having a secondary hydroxy group and a primary hydroxy group (propylene glycol, glycerol or the like) is used as the alcohol, the corresponding hydroxyketone compound is produced. A sulfite, a hydrogensulfite, a pyrosulfite, a thiosulfate or the like can be used as the reducing inorganic compound.

The method for producing the film from the polymer-rare earth complex comprises coating a base with a solution dissolving the polymeric compound in an organic solvent to previously form a film, impregnating the formed film with an organic solvent containing a rare earth ion, then drying the impregnated film, wherein the polymeric compound is obtained by bonding bipyridyl, phenanthroline and their derivatives, all of which have the site located by conjugated π-electrons, to the main chain of the polymer to form the pendant-shape.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain high catalytic activity over a long period of time by using a metallic complex catalyst obtained by coordinating a metallic compound to the bipyridyl part of a carrier for a catalyst comprising a specified polymer. SOLUTION: The carrier for a catalyst comprises a polymer having a structural unit of the formula [where R1 and R2 are the same or different and are each H, a hydrocarbon, a halogen or an alkoxy and (n) is an integer of >=2, e.g. 2-100]. A metallic compound is coordinated to the bipyridyl part of the carrier to obtain the objective metallic complex catalyst. Cupric chloride or a halide of a metal such as ruthenium or rhodium is, e.g. used as the metallic compound. The metallic complex catalyst is obtained by allowing the metallic compound to react with the carrier in an appropriate solvent. The complex formation reaction is carried out, e.g. in an inert gaseous atmosphere of nitrogen or argon or in an atmosphere of carbon nonoxide under atmospheric pressure or elevated pressure.
