Abstract: Precipitated silicas which have the following physicochemical characteristics, depending on the manner in which they are milled: -Pendulum -roller mill Jet mill -BET m2/g 15-110 15-110 -surface -area -Tamped g/l 150-750 90-650 -den- -sity -Cu abrasion in 10% mg 5-30 5-30 -strength glycerol -dispersion -Lightness % 86-96 90-96 -value -A -Particle size dis- as in FIG. 1 as in FIG. 2 -tribution curve -determined by a -Coulter Counter -"ALPINE screen retain- % by 63 mu m weight -Viscosity of a 30% mPa.s 30,000 to 60,000 -strength dispersion in -a 1:1 glycerol/water -mixture (Brookfield -RTV, Sp5) - are prepared by diluting a precipitated silica original suspension obtained according to German Published Application DAS 1,467,019 and simultaneously adding alkali metal silicate solution, sulfuric acid and water while keeping the pH constant between 7 and 9. The precipitated silica is then filtered off, washed, dried and milled using a pendulum roller mill or a jet mill. Because of their abrasiveness, the precipitated silicas can be employed as cleansing and abrasive agents and, in the case of the jet-milled product, also as a polishing agent, abrasive and thickener in toothpastes.

Abstract: In the prepn. of hydrophilic powder (I) with a large specific surface area for electron microscopy, (I) is treated with a hydrophobising agent (II). (II) pref. is a low mol. organopolysiloxane (IIA) with a b.pt. below 120 deg.C. (II) improves the adhesion of (I) to the carbophilic carrier film, saves times in specimen prepn. and reduces the tendency of (I) to become oriented on the film. Samples of a silica mixt. with about equal numbers of large and small particles were (A) not treated, (B) hydrophobised with hexamethyldisilazane. Electron microscopy indicated that the samples contained (A) 46.7, (B) 48.3% small particles (average particle size 16.5 nm) and (A) 53.3, (B) 51.7% large particles (52 nm).

Abstract: Finely-divided silicon dioxide is produced by a process comprising introducing an alkali metal silicate solution containing from 50 to 250 gm. of SiO2 per litre of solution together with an acid into an alkali metal silicate solution containing from 5 to 25 gm. of SiO2 per litre of solution, the viscosity of the reaction medium being substantially constant over at least 30% of the total precipitation time, the temperature in the reaction medium being kept at from 80 DEG to 90 DEG C. during precipitation and the pH at from 10 to 12, the addition of the reactants being terminated when the viscosity, having passed through a maximum, drops to a value less than 100% above the initial viscosity, additional acid then being added until the suspension has a pH of about 2.5.

Abstract: Prodn. of pptd. silica with a cleaning, polishing and thickening action in dentifrices is effected by mixing conventionally prepd. pptd. silicas with different particle sizes and densities in the form of a slurry, and processing the slurry by filtration, washing, drying and grinding. Also claimed are pptd. silicas characterised in terms of their physicochemical properties. Pref. silicas used are (A) a thickener-type silica prepd. as described in DE1467019; (B) an abrasive-type silica prepd. as described in DE3114493, example 10; and (C) a silica with a low Fe content prepd. as described in DE 1293138, example 1. Combinations of (A)+(B), (A)+(C) and (B)+(C) may also be used.

Abstract: Precipitated silicas having the following physicochemical characteristic data: according to Fig. 1 are produced by a process in which an original suspension of precipitated silica produced according to German Auslegeschrift No. 1,467,019 is diluted and an alkali metal silicate solution, sulphuric acid and water are simultaneously added, the pH value being kept constant between 7 and 9. The precipitated silicas are then filtered, washed, dried and micronized by means of a micronizer. Because of their abrasiveness the precipitated silicas can be used as polishing agents and abrasives and the micronized silicas may be used as polishing agents, abrasives and thickeners in toothpastes.
