Abstract: Liquid cyanuric chloride and the organic-aq. solvent are mixed, and agitation, so that the liquid cyanuric chloride is conducted at between its m.pt. and 200 degrees C at a rate VCy (in kg/hr.) into the flowing organic-aq. solvent, the resulting flowing mixt. being cooled to the desired storage temp. within not more than 3 mins. of contacting the cyanuric chloride with the solvent. The value of VCy is given by the equation: In the equation, P is the concn. (wt.%) of cyanuric chloride desired in the soln. or suspension. PLM is the concn. of cyanuric chloride in the solvent used (and may be zero). VLM is the charge rate of solvent in kg/hr. PLM, VLM and TL, (temp. of the solvent used) must be so chosen that the expression does not exceed to boiling temp. (degrees C) of the solvent (Cp(LM) and Cp(Cy) being the specific heat capacities (cal. g-1. degree-1) of solvent and cyanuric chloride, respectively). Cyanuric chloride is used as an intermediate for e.g. herbicides, vulcanisation additives, etc. Process allows suspensions or solns. of cyanuric chloride in water-contg. organic solvents to be produced without significant hydrolysis.

Abstract: There is provided a process for the production of a solution or suspension of cyanuric chloride in a water containing organic solvent wherein the liquid cyanuric chloride and the organic-aqueous solvent are mixed together while being agitated, the liquid cyanuric chloride at a temperature between its melting point and 200 DEG C. is led into the flowing organic-aqueous solvent with a velocity of Vcy (in kg per hour) wherein where P is the desired concentration of cyanuric chloride in the solution or suspension to be produced in weight %, PLM is the concentration of cyanuric chloride in the solvent used which also includes O, VLM is the velocity of the solvent added in kg/h, AND PLM, VLM and TLM, the temperature of the added solvent, are so selected that the expression does not exceed the boiling temperature in DEG C. of the solvent used and wherein Cp(LM) and Cp(Cy) signify the specific heat capacities in cal. x g 1 x ( DEG degree C) 1 of the solvent and cyanuric chloride respectively, whereupon in a given case within at most 3 minutes after bringing the cyanuric chloride and solvent into contact the flowing mixture is cooled to the desired storage temperature.

The monothiocyanato-s-triazines can be prepared from the corresponding monomercaptotriazines by reaction with cyanogen chloride or cyanogen bromide in the presence of a hydrogen halide acceptor. The bis-thiocyanato-s-triazines can be prepared either by reaction of the corresponding chlorotriazines with potassium, sodium or ammonium thiocyanate in organic solvents, or by reacting the correspondingly substituted dimercaptotriazines with cyanogen chloride or cyanogen bromide in the presence of a hydrogen halide acceptor.
