Abstract: The subject matter of the invention is a process for the production of N-acetyl-2,3-dehydroaminocarboxylic acid esters by reaction of the corresponding 2-azido-carboxylic acid esters with a mixture of one part by volume of acetic anhydride and 1.5 to 5 parts by volume of acetic acid in the presence of rhenium VII sulfide and/or oxide and at a temperature between 50 DEG and 150 DEG C., in a given case, in the simultaneous presence of dry hydrogen chloride.

Pref. the organic solvent is an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon, a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon, an ether, an alkyl ester of a carboxylic acid or an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic alcohol. The organic solvent is pref. satd. with an aq. buffer of pH 3-8.

Abstract: L-proline is produced from the methyl or ethyl ester of L-pyroglutamic acid by reacting this with at least twice the molar amount of phosgene to form the corresponding 1-chlorocarbonyl-5,5-dichloroproline ester, producing the corresponding 2-chloro-1-chlorocarbonyl-pyrrolin-(2)-carboxylic acid ester-(5) therefrom by splitting off hydrogen chloride, catalytically hydrogenating the pyrrolin-(2) compound to the corresponding N-chlorocarbonyl-proline ester and hydrolyzing the latter with acid to form L-proline.

Abstract: The subject matter of the invention is the new 2-azido-3-benzyloxy-propionic acid benzyl ester which is a valuable intermediate product for the production of D,L-serine or derivatives of D,L-serine. The new compound is produced by reacting 2-chloroacrylonitrile with twice the molar amount of benzyl alcohol to form 3-benzyloxy-2-chloropropionic acid imino benzyl ester, saponifying this with acid to form 3-benzyloxy-2-chloropropionic acid benzyl ester, and finally exchanging the chlorine atom by means of an alkali metal azide in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst for an azido group.

Abstract: Prodn. of (R)-pantolactone (III) comprises: (a) reacting a beta -substd. pivalaldehyde of formula: X-CH2-C(CH3)2-CHO (I) with hydrogen cyanide in an aq. medium or an organic solvent contg. at least a trace of water, in the presence of a catalytic amt. of (R)-oxy-nitrilase (EC 4.1.2.10) to give the (R)-cyanohydrin isomer of formula: X-CH2-C(CH3)2-CH(CN)OH (II), and (b) hydrolysing in an acid medium, with cyclisation. X = halo, OR or OCOR; R = 1-4C alkyl, 2-4C alkenyl, 2-4C alkynyl, aryl or aralkyl. The following cpds. (II) are new. (R)(-)-2-hydroxy-3,3-dimethyl -4-(bromo, chloro, methoxy, ethoxy or acetyl) butanonitrile.
