Abstract: The prepn. of 2,6-dibromo-n-caproic acid (I) and its esters is carried out by (a) reacting epsilon-caprolactone (II) with =2 (esp. 1.7-1.8) moles of Br2 per mole of (II) in the presence of PBr3 and/or PCl3 at >70 degrees C and (b) treating the reaction mixt. with H2O or an alcohol. (I) is esp. useful as an intermediate for lysine. The process gives high yields (e.g. 91-98%) of (I) with only insignificant amts. of by-prods. using starting materials that can easily be prepd. on a technical scale.
