The present disclosure relates to methods and to a wireless device, 10,20, for enabling device-to-device communication. In particular the present disclosure relates to a method comprising configuring, direct control messages and reference signals, based on the capability and state of the wireless device with regards to device to device communication. The method comprises, associating, S1a, in the wireless device, at least one direct control message to a synchronisation reference signal, configuring, S2a, the at least one direct control message and/or the synchronisation reference signal, such that a recipient can identify the association between the at least one direct control message and the synchronisation reference signal, using the configuration of the direct control message and/or the synchronisation reference signal; and transmitting, S3, the at least one direct control message.

There is provided a method of operating a network node in a communication network, the communication network comprising a mobile device, a first base station and a second base station, the first base station having a lower transmission power than the second base station and being located within the coverage area of the second base station, the mobile device being located within an imbalanced region between the first base station and the second base station and being served by the first base station, the method in the network node comprising configuring the mobile device, the first base station and the second base station such that the mobile device transmits uplink data to the first base station, and the mobile device receives downlink data only from the second base station. Corresponding methods are provided for operating a mobile device and a second base station. A network node, mobile device and second base station are also provided that are configured to perform the respective operating methods.

There is provided a method of processing signals in a network node or user equipment in a communication network, the signals comprising data symbols for a plurality of users, and wherein joint or multi-user detection is used to determine the data symbols in the received signals, the method comprising estimating a signal quality from the received signals prior to performing the joint or multi-user detection.

The present disclosure relates to a method of radio communication between a first radio device and a second radio device using a first frequency resource and a first communication protocol by means of a network node, at least one of the radio devices being served by said network node. The method comprises determining a second frequency resource to use for non-network assisted device-to-device (D2D) communication between the first and second radio devices in case of a radio link failure between said at least one radio device and the network node. The method also comprises determining a second communication protocol to use for the non-network assisted D2D communication between the first and second radio devices in the case of a radio link failure between said at least one radio device and the network node.
