Abstract: A succinimide dispersant, which is the reaction product of hydrocarbons or polymers functionalized by halogenation (e.g. chlorination), thermal "ene" reaction or free radical grafting and derivatized with a heavy polyamine. A heavy polyamine is a mixture of polyalkylenepolyamines comprising small amounts of lower polyamine oligomers such as tetraethylene pentamine and pentahexamine but primarily oligomers with 7 or more nitrogens, 2 or more primary amines per molecule, and more extensive branching than conventional polyamine mixtures.

Abstract: Oil-soluble dispersant additives are disclosed. The additives comprise the reaction product of a functionalized 1-butene copolymer and at least one nucleophilic reactant selected from amines, amino alcohols, alcohols, and reactive metal compounds. The functionalized copolymer has within its structure at least one acyl functional group selected from the group consisting of C4 to C10 dicarboxylic acids and derivatives thereof and C3 to C10 monocarboxylic acids and derivatives thereof. The 1-butene copolymer is derived from 1-butene and at least one other alpha -olefin of formula CH2=CHR', wherein R' is methyl or a C3 to C12 linear or branched alkyl group. The copolymer has a number average molecular weight of at least about 700, a molecular weight distribution of less than 5, and ethenylidene groups terminating at least about 30% of all polymer chains. The dispersant additives are useful in oleaginous compositions including lubricating oil compositions and concentrates and fuel compositions.

Abstract: Processes for producing saturated polymers monosubstituted with carboxylic amides are disclosed. One process comprises reacting a monounsaturated hydrocarbon polymer with carbon monoxide and a polyamine containing at least two amino groups at least one of which is a reactive amino group, in the presence of a catalyst comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of the transition metals of Group 8 to 10 and the metal compounds thereof. Another process comprises reacting a polyamine containing a reactive amino group with a monofuntionalized, saturated hydrocarbon polymer containing a carboxylic acid or carboxylic ester functional group, the monofunctionalized hydrocarbon polymer obtained by reacting a starting monounsaturated hydorcarbon polymer with carbon monoxide and water or alcohol in the presence of a Group 8-10 transition metal catalyst. The products of the processes are useful as additives in lubricating oils and in fuels, for example, as dispersants and/or detergents.

Abstract: The invention pertains to the prestripping of polymer prior to use in the Koch reaction for making dispersant additives. It was djscovered that by prestripping or removal of light hydrocarbon andunreacted monomer from the polymer before the carbonylation step of the Koch reaction, the amount of light ester impurities generated was minimized. Light ester is an undesirable byproduct that adversely affects the recycle of the catalyst from the functionalization step of the Koch reaction.

Abstract: Polar monomer-containing copolymers derived from at least one .alpha., ,.bet a. unsaturated carbonyl compound, such as alkyl acrylates and one or more olefins, such olefins including ethylene and C3-C20 .alpha.-olefins such as propylene and 1-butene, which copolymers have (a) an average ethylene sequence length, ESL, of from about 1.0 to less than about 3.0; (b) an average of at least 5 branches per 100 carbon atoms of the copolymer chains comprising the copolymer; (c) at least about 50 % of said branches being methyl and/or ethyl branches; (d) substantially all of said incorporated polar monomer is present at the terminal position o f said branches; (e) at least about 30 % of said copolymer chains terminated with a vinyl or vinylene group; (f) a number average molecular weight, Mn, of from about 300 to about 15,000 when the copolymer is intended for dispersant or wax crystal modifier uses and up to about 500,000 where intended for viscosity modifier uses; and (g) substantial solubility in hydrocarbon and/or synthetic base oil. The copolymers are produced using late-transition-metal catalyst systems and, as an olefin monomer source other than ethylene preferably inexpensive, highly dilute refinery or steam cracker feed streams that have undergone only limited clean-up steps. Fuel and lubricating oil additives, particularly dispersants, wax crystal modifiers and flow improvers, are produced. Where functionalization and derivatization of these copolymers are required for such additives it is facilitated by the olefinic structures available in the copolymer chains.
