Abstract: Polymers (including copolymers) derived from one or more olefins, such including ethylene and C3-C20 alpha-olefins such as propylene and 1-butene, which polymers have (a) an average ethylene sequence length, ESL, of from, about 1.0 to less than about 3.0; (b) an average of at least 5 branches per 100 carbon atoms of the polymer chains comprising the polymer; (c) at least about 50% of said branches being methyl and/or ethyl branches; (d) at least about 30% of said polymer chains terminated with a vinyl or vinylene group; (e) a number average molecular weight, Mn, of from about 300 to about 15,000 when the polymer is intended for dispersant or wax crystal modifier uses and up to about 500,000 where intended for viscosity modifier uses; and (f) substantial solubility in hydrocarbon and/or synthetic base oil. The polymers are produced using late-transition-metal catalyst systems and, preferably, inexpensive, highly dilute refinery or steam cracker feed streams that have undergone only limited clean-up steps. Fuel and lubricating oil additives, particularly dispersants, wax crystal modifiers and flow improvers, are produced. Where functionalization and derivatization of these polymers is required for such additives it is facilitated by the olefinic structures available in the polymer chains.

Abstract: Polar monomer-containing copolymers derived from at least one .alpha., .beta. unsaturated carbonyl compound, such as alkyl acrylates and one or more olefins, such olefins including ethylene and C3-C20 .alpha.-olefins such as propylene and 1-butene, which copolymers have (a) an average ethylene sequence length, ESL, of from about 1.0 to less than about 3.0; (b) an average of at least 5 branches per 100 carbon atoms of the copolymer chains comprising the copolymer; (c) at least about 50 % of said branches being methyl and/or ethyl branches; (d) substantially all of said incorporated polar monomer is present at the terminal position of said branches; (e) at least about 30 % of said copolymer chains terminated with a vinyl or vinylene group; (f) a number average molecular weight, Mn, of from about 300 to about 15,000 when the copolymer is intended for dispersant or wax crystal modifier uses and up to about 500,000 where intended for viscosity modifier uses; and (g) substantial solubility in hydrocarbon and/or synthetic base oil. The copolymers are produced using late-transition-metal catalyst systems and, as an olefin monomer source other than ethylene preferably inexpensive, highly dilute refinery or steam cracker feed streams that have undergone only limited cleanup steps. Fuel and lubricating oil additives, particularly dispersants, wax crystal modifiers and flow improvers, are produced. Where functionalization and derivatization of these copolymers are required for such additives it is facilitated by the olefinic structures available in the copolymer chains.

Abstract: Processes for preparing amidoamine products derived from hydrocarbon polymers containing carboxylic acid, thioacid, ester or thioester functional groups are disclosed. More particularly, a process is disclosed which comprises the steps of: (A) reacting (i) a hydrocarbon polymer functionalized to contain functional groups of formula -CO-Y-R3, the hydrocarbon polymer having a number average molecular weight of at least about 500 prior to functionalization, wherein Y is O or S, R3 is hydrogen, hydrocarbyl, or substituted hydrocarbyl and wherein at least 50 mol% of the functional groups are attached to a tertiary carbon atom of the polymer, with (ii) a volatile amine containing at least two reactive amino groups under conditions effective to amidate at least a portion of the -CO-Y-R3 functional groups and form a first amidoamine adduct containing at least one reactive amino group; and (B) reacting the first amidoamine adduct with an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated compound to form a second amidoamine adduct, wherein the .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated compound has formula (I) wherein X is O or S; Z is OR7, -SR7, or -NR7(R8), and R4, R5, R6, R7 and R8 are the same or different and are hydrogen, hydrocarbyl, or substituted hydrocarbyl. In reaction step (B), the reactive amino groups in the first amidoamine adducts react non-selectively with both the carbon-carbon double bonds and the -C(=X)Z functional groups in the unsaturated compounds or, with suitable control of the reaction conditions, react selectively with the carboncarbon double bonds only. In the case of selective reaction, the second amidoamine adduct is characterized by having unreacted -C(=X)Z functional groups, and the adduct can be further reacted with a second amine in order to amidate the -C(=X)Z functional groups. The amidoamine products are useful as additives in fuels and lubricating oils.

Abstract: The invention pertains to improved lubricating oil dispersants wherein a fractionating polymer is prepared prior to functionalization (e.g., in the Koch reaction) for making dispersant additives. In one aspect, it was discovered that by fractionating a polymer to remove light hydrocarbon and unreacted monomer from the polymer before the carbonylation step of the Koch reaction, the amount of light ester impurities generated was minimized. Light ester is an undesirable byproduct that adversely affects the recycle of the catalyst from the functionalization step of the Koch reaction. The invention also pertains to improved lubricating oil nitrogen-containing dispersant additives derived from fractionated polymer.

The soft polymer component (SPC) is a copolymer of a major olefinic monomer and a minor olefinic monomer. The major olefinic monomer is either ethylene or propylene and forms the majority of the SPC. Preferred films after cold-drawing exhibit a water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of at least 100 g-mil/m2-day.
