Abstract:
In a method of transmitting broadcasting signals, a transmission frame has the same configuration as that of the existing terrestrial DMB signal. A transmission frame including a base layer service stream is modulated to a base layer, and a transmission frame including an enhancement layer service stream is modulated to an enhancement layer. The enhancement layer service stream is composed of additional data that is not included in the base layer service stream, in order to provide an enhancement layer service. In this way, the method can provide a high-quality service requiring high transmission efficiency while being compatible with the existing terrestrial DMB system. The high transmission efficiency means a higher data transfer rate than that of the existing terrestrial DMB system.

A transmission device and receiving device for providing high-quality multimedia services in a digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) transmission system is provided. The transmission device separates input multimedia contents into a base layer elementary stream and an enhancement layer elementary stream, encodes the base layer elementary stream and the enhancement layer elementary stream, transforms the base layer elementary stream and the enhancement layer elementary stream into a base layer SL packet and an enhancement layer SL packet, transforms the base layer SL packet and the enhancement layer SL packet into a base layer PES packet and an enhancement layer PES packet, and multiplexes the base layer PES packet and the enhancement layer PES packet according to a base layer elementary stream and an enhancement layer elementary stream and outputs a base layer TS packet and an enhancement layer TS packet.

Provided is an apparatus and method for a digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) service. The DMB transmitter includes a base layer transmission processor for encoding base layer stream, an enhancement layer transmission processor for encoding enhancement layer stream, and a hierarchical transmitter for transmitting the base layer stream and the enhancement layer stream by allocating a predetermined bit value through encoding the base layer stream outputted from the base layer transmission processor and the enhancement layer stream outputted from the enhancement layer transmission processor based on gray coding and performing hierarchical symbol mapping.

A transmission apparatus for broadcasting service according to the present invention includes a sync layer (SL) packetizer for receiving a base layer elementary stream and an enhancement layer elementary stream and generating an SL packet for the base layer elementary stream and an SL packet for the enhancement layer elementary stream, a packetized elementary stream (PES) packetizer for converting the SL packets into respective PES packets, a first transport stream (TS) multiplexer for multiplexing the PES packet and outputting a base layer transport stream, and a second TS multiplexer for multiplexing the PES packet and outputting an enhancement layer transport stream. The second TS multiplexer inserts a descriptor into the enhancement layer transport stream. The descriptor includes information about whether the enhancement layer transport stream is dependent on the base layer transport stream.

Therefore, the hierarchical modulation device can improve receiving performance of the enhancement layer without influencing the base layer.

In a terrestrial DMB, a transmitting apparatus multiplexes a plurality of service streams generated for any service to a plurality of ensembles. In this case, the same sending time data is constructed in a time stamp field of each frame for each of a plurality of ensembles. With this configuration, a plurality of transmitting apparatuses can send a plurality of transmission frames including service streams for the same service at the same point of time, and thus receiving apparatuses can actually receive a plurality of transmission frames at the same point of time.
