    Abstract: A defect detection apparatus is provided for detecting defects in a barrier of an imaging device or a three-dimensional printer. The barrier defect detection apparatus comprises a barrier housing to receive a barrier, the barrier comprising a material through which electromagnetic radiation is transmissible and being arranged to provide protection for at least one component of the imaging device. A barrier defect detector is provided, comprising an emitter to emit electromagnetic radiation towards the barrier and a detector to detect electromagnetic radiation received via a predicted path from the barrier. The barrier defect detector has an output port to provide a signal to a controller, which determines if the barrier is defective depending upon a detected level of electromagnetic radiation indicated by the received signal.
