Abstract: O-Nitrophenetol is prepared by exposing 1 mol of o-nitrochlorobenzene to the action of about 1.05 to about 1.4 mol of ethanol in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst in about 40 to about 70 per cent strength by weight alkali metal hydroxide solution at temperatures of about 50 to about 80 DEG C in such a manner that the ethanol concentration of the reaction mixture does not exceed 1.5 per cent by weight during the entire course of the reaction.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of 2,4-dinitrophenyl ethers of the general formula (1) (1) in which R denotes an alkyl(C1-C6) or alkoxy(C1-C4)alky(C1-C4) group by reacting 1 mole of 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene in the anhydrous alcohol which is required for the ether formation and is of the general formula (2) R-OH (2) in which R has the abovementioned meaning, in the presence of 1.0 to 3.0 mole of an anhydrous alkali metal carbonate, at temperatures of 20 DEG C. to 150 DEG C., where appropriate under pressure.
