Abstract: The invention relates to films and tubular structures which are selectively permeable to liquids and gases which are based on a copolymer composed of a copolymerized fluorinated olefin, copolymerized vinyl acetate and, optionally, a copolymerized olefin. It is possible for the acetate groups of the copolymer to have been saponified to form OH groups. The films or tubular structures have in each case an inherent, latent capacity for modifying their structure and are at the same time oleophobic and oleophilic. The invention also embraces processes for the preparation of the shaped articles described and processes for modifying their structure. The invention also relates to the use of shaped articles according to the invention.

A transparent thermoplastic composition comprises (A) 5 to 70% by weight of a graft copolymer of vinyl chloride on 5 to 50%, calculated on the graft copolymer, of an elastomer having a particle size smaller than 0À4 micron and consisting of at most 90% of butadiene or a homologous conjugated diolefin and at least 10% of a comonomer, that is homopolymerizable to yield a homopolymer having a higher refractive index than polyvinyl chloride and improves the compatibility of the elastomer with vinyl chloride, or a plurality of comonomers, part of which is a comonomer that is homopolymerizable to yield a homopolymer having a higher refractive index than polyvinyl chloride while the other part is a comonomer that improves the compatibility of the elastomer with vinyl chloride and (B) 95 to 30% of a bulk or suspension polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride or a blend of such polymers. The composition is produced by preparing the elastomer by emulsion polymerization, introducing the resulting elastomer latex into a reaction zone in which vinyl chloride is being emulsion polymerized, the polymerization having reached an extent of 40 to 80%, continuing the polymerization of vinyl chloride until a conversion of at most 95% has been reached, and drying the resulting graft polymer to obtain a powder which is then mixed with the polyvinyl chloride or vinyl chloride copolymer. In one embodiment, the elastomer is prepared by copolymerizing the conjugated diolefin and the monomer which regulates the refractive index to 50 to 90% conversion and then adding the other comonomer and continuing polymerization, whereby the latter monomer is partially grafted to copolymer of the diene and former monomer. In Examples 1 to 4, a butadienestyrene-vinyl acetate elastomer is grafted with vinyl chloride and the resulting graft polymer is blended with polyvinyl chloride, a tin stabilizer and montan wax. Similar blends are prepared in Examples 5 to 16, except that the elastomer is prepared from (i) butadiene, chloroprene and, optionally, acrylonitrile or (ii) butadiene, styrene and acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, vinyl pyrrolidone, vinyl carbazol: or benzoic acid vinyl ester.
