Abstract: The invention comprises as new products glycol or polyglycol mono-esters of a condensation product of a fatty acid having at least 12 but not more than 27 carbon atoms and an amino carboxylic acid, which esters are suitable for use as textile softening agents, and in which the ester residue contains from 1 to 4 ethenoxy (-CH2.CH2.O-) groups. They may be obtained by reacting the condensation product of the fatty acid and amino acid at a raised temperature and in the presence of a condensation catalyst with from 1 to 4 molecular proportions of ethylene oxide, or by reacting with 1 molecular proportion of the appropriate polyglycol or ethylene glycol, or by reacting a salt of the condensation product at a raised temperature with one molecular proportion of ethylene chlorhydrin. Specified amino carboxylic acids are glycocoll, sarcosine, and protein hydrolysates and the fatty acids used may be natural or synthetic fatty acids. The reaction with ethylene oxide is preferably carried out at under pressure and at elevated temperature. In examples (1) industrial coconut oil fatty acids are condensed in the form of the acid chlorides and in the presence of sodium hydroxide solution with glycocoll and the coconut oil fatty acid glycocollide obtained is freed from water and reacted with ethylene oxide in the presence of sodium methylate at 120-170 DEG C. and under pressure so as to cause 4 molecular proportions of ethylene oxide to combine additively with the glycocollide to yield a compound useful as a preparation agent for staple fibres of regenerated cellulose; (2) industrial oleic acid is condensed with an equimolecular quantity of sarcoside and the anhydrous sarcoside converted to its anhydrous sodium salt which is then reacted with 1 molecular proportion of ethylene chlorhydrin at raised temperature to yield a preparation agent for regenerated cellulose; (3) stearic acid sarcoside is reacted with ethylene oxide in the presence of caustic soda to introduce 1 and 4 molecular proportions of ethylene oxide respectively; (4) a condensation product of oleic acid and a protein hydrolysate obtained by hydrolysis of leather with a caustic alkali is condensed in the form of concentrated aqueous paste of its sodium salt with 1 molecular proportion of ethylene chlorhydrin at a temperature of at least 100 DEG C. with or without pressure to yield a product similar to that formed in (2). Specifications 401,712 and 599,280 are referred to.
