    Abstract: 1288545 Optical brightening FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 29 Jan 1970 [30 Jan 1969] 4340/70 Heading DIP Fibrous materials of polymers comprising at least 85% of polyacrylonitrile are optically brightened by impregnating the material with a liquor containing a brightener of general formula in which A represents a branched or unbranched C 2-4 alkylene group, R 1 represents a C 1-4 alkyl group, R 2 represents a C 1-4 alkyl group or the two radicals R 2 together with the nitrogen atom form a saturated heterocyclic ring, X represents a colourless anion and n is 1 or 2, adjusting the liquor content of the material to 5-120% by weight referred to the material and heating, preferably with steam, for 2 seconds to 30 minutes at 100‹-150‹C. If the brightened fabric is to be printed immediately it is preferably subjected to intermediate drying at 50‹-150‹C. Thickeners, for example, starch ether, tragacanth, carob bean flour and crystal gum, are added to prevent migration of the optical brightener during drying. Enhanced brightening is achieved when a non-ionic condensation product of a fatty acid and oxyethylated ammonia and/or a quaternary condensation product of a fatty acid and a low molecular weight aliphatic polyamine is added to the brightening liquor. A second brightener of general formula in which A, R 1 , R 2 , X and n have the meanings specified above, shows a greenish-blue fluorescence and is able when applied in admixture with the compounds of formula II, to compensate the reddish tint of the latter.

    Abstract: A mixture of optical brighteners containing 0.05 to 0.95 part by weight of a compound from the benzoxazolyl- or benzothiazolylstilbene series and 0.95 to 0.05 part by weight of a compound of the bis-benzoxazolyl- or bis-benzothiazolylstilbene series or of the benzoxazolyl- or benzothiazolyl-stilbene oxazolo[5,4-6]pyridinyl or oxazolo[2,3-b]pyridinyl series. These mixtures show an enhanced degree of whiteness as compared to the same amount of the single components.

    Abstract: New unsymmetrical benzoxazolyl-(2')-benzimidazolyl-(2")-naphthalenes are of formula (I): In the formula, A is naphthylene, opt. substd. by alkyl, halogen, esp. Cl or Br, or by an opt. functionally changed carboxy or sulpho gp. R1 is H, 1-4C alkyl opt. substd. by OH or CN, or an aryl or aralkyl gp. R2 - R9 are each H or a non-chromophoric substituent. R10 is H or alkyl. B- is a colourless aniom. n is O or 1.) (I) are colourless to light yellow and have, in soln., a strong violet to blue fluorescences. (I) are used as optical brighteners, for lacquers, synthetic fibres, e.g. of cellulose acetate, polyamides, polyolefins, PVC, polyvinylidene chloride, polyesters, esp. polyacrylonitrile, and also foils films, belts and moulded articles. (I) may also be added to detergents. In an example, 1- Benzoxazolyl-(2') -4- benzimidazolyl-(2") -naphthalene was prepd. by reacting 4- benzoxazolyl-(2') -naphthoic acid-1 with 1,2-diaminobenzene in polyphosphoric acid.

    Abstract: 1399509 Bis-benzofuran derivatives HOECHST AG 11 Aug 1972 [13 Aug 1971] 37574/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein A and A 1 each represents an aromatic, mono- or polynuclear ring system in which two adjacent C atoms are linked to the furan nucleus as indicated, R and R 1 each represents H, halogen, C 1 to C 4 alkyl, phenyl which may be substituted by C 1 to C 4 alkyl or alkoxy, halogen or COOH or SO 3 H or their functional derivatives, and B represents a continuously conjugated chain of C atoms, which may be completely or partly a constituent of a carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring system and which is conjugated with the adjacent double bonds of the two furan nuclei ; the ring systems A and A 1 may bear one or more non-chromophoric substituents. They may be obtained by (I) condensing intramolecularly a compound of the formula (II) condensing, intramolecularly, a compound of the formula wherein B 11 is a continuously conjugated chain of C atoms, (III) condensing, intermolecularly, a compound of the formula with a compound of the formula wherein D and E represent direct bonds or are continuously conjugated chains of C atoms which may be completely or partly constituents of a carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring system and which are conjugated with the adjacent double bonds of the furan nucleus, and R 6 represents an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl radical ; and (IV) condensing, intramolecularly, a compound of the formula whereby the radical B 11 migrates to the 2- position of the furan rings. Examples are given for the preparation of the compounds. They are useful as optical brightening agents. Compounds of Formula IV are obtained by reacting compounds of formula wherein M is an alkali or alkaline earth metal, with compounds of the formula wherein X is the anion of an inorganic acid.
