Abstract: Provided is a framework supporting presentation of help information via a computer system user interface in response to the proximity of an input device pointer to an interface area associated with a user interface component. The framework provides generic methods which remove from user interface components much of the task of managing the presentation of help information. The framework supports presentation of help information for a platform-independent component programming environment and supports presentations in a plurality of different styles (such as text, audio, animating graphics, etc) by means of selectable presentation methods.

Abstract: A user interface component, eg a gauge, adapted to present a changing value according to a predetermined behavioural and presentational characteristic comprises a kernel adapted to display a presentation value, a control interface through which an external system communicates the changing value to the kernel and a behaviour interface through which the behavioural characteristic of the component is controlled. The behaviour interface may be a Java interface with a method which calculates the next value for the presentation value. This may be an "immediate" behaviour, which simply returns the current changing value, a "linear" behaviour where the presentation moves towards the changing value by up to a maximum amount each time or an "inertial" behaviour modelling damped simple harmonic motion. The component may give some form of indication when the presentation value is curtently equal to the changing value.
