    Abstract: A track following servo system is disclosed for use with magnetic tape syste ms in which magnetic servo track patterns contain transitions recorded at more than on azimuthal orientation across the width of the servo track. The timing of a signal derived from reading at any point across the width of such a pattern varies continuously as the read head is moved across the servo track. The pattern i s read by a servo read head whose width is small compared to the servo track patter n. The combination of a wide servo pattern and a narrow servo read head offers excellent position sensing linearity and dynamic range. In the preferred embodiment, t he servo read head is also narrow with respect to the data tracks, which provid es the additional advantages of superior immunity to position sensing errors caused by defects or temporal variations in the servo read head, defects in the servo pattern on the tape, wear of the head or tape, or debris collection on the head or tape. Position sensing with this system is achieved by deriving a ratio of two ser vo pattern intervals and therefore is insensitive to tape speed during reading. The ser vo patterns may include spacing intervals recognizable for error detection and correction purposes. Servo tracks are recorded using a patterned multiple ga p servo write head whosemagnetic gaps have geometries appropriate to generate the desired servo patterns. The patterned gaps of the servo write head are produced by photolithographically defined electroplating of permalloy on a ferrite ri ng head structure.

At least three spaced apart write elements, two of parallel azimuthal orientation, and at least one of a different azimuthal orientation, write patterns corresponding to the write elements, fixing both the distance between transitions having different azimuthal orientation, the "A" distance, and the distance between transitions having parallel azimuthal orientation, the "B" distance. The fixed distances provide precise sensing of lateral position based on a measure of time over the "A" distance compared to time over the "B" distance.

    Abstract: A magnetic tape drive 20 includes a tape path 21 having first and second reels 22 and 23 for a tape 1, a transducer head 24 and guides 10a, 10b and 10c for the tape. The guides 10a, 10b and 10c are pivotally mounted on axles 15a, 15b and 15c and the operation of the drive is controlled by a controller 25. Fach of the guides is a constrained pivot compound radius tape post. The post is mounted on an axle which allows it to pivot when the tape changes direction. The pivoting action serves to peel away all tape which has been in stationary contact with the post, thereby reducing startup stiction. Above a certain pivotation angle the post is prevented from further pivotation either by a fixed stop or by torque exerted on the post by the tape which is under tension.

    Abstract: The invention is a tape reel brake which is mounted in a well in the top of a tape reel hub. The well is inside the tape bearing surface of the hub. The brake is mounted to be compliantly biased away from the base of the well. The hub is seated against a first inside surface of a tape cartridge housing. The hub and brake are seated in the tape cartridge such that teeth on the periphery of the brake are biased against the opposite inside surface of the cartridge housing about the periphery of an opening therein. The biasing of the brake against the opposite inside surface both prevents the rotation of the reel and shields out dust when the tape cartridge is removed from a tape drive. To rotate the reel, a tape drive clutch enters the opening in the opposite inside surface and depresses the brake into the well to mate with a smaller diameter portion of the hub or a recessed portion of the brake. The hub is always maintained on the inside surface of the housing, thereby eliminating lateral motion which could disrupt the tape path.
